Melissa McCarthy has come onboard as executive producers of a new documentary about West Hollywood candlemaker Tim Sullivan.
The 82-year-old nearly lost his lease and his beloved business along with it back in January 2022. The story of how the candleshop was founded, what it became to many people and how it was saved captured readers all over the region.

Sullivan, who became sober over four decades ago, came to WeHo from New York and founded Timothy Jay Candles, which became an unexpected support hub for the sober community, employing numerous homeless individuals and those in recovery.
“Once we discovered Tim Sullivan’s heartwarming story and the incredible impact he has had on numerous lives through his beautiful candle creations, we realized that these filmmakers were effectively sharing the kind of narrative we are passionate about bringing to a wider audience,” McCarthy told the Hollywood Reporter.
The documentary will delve into various aspects of Sullivan’s life, including his journey to sobriety, his involvement in the LGBTQ+ community, and his encounters with renowned figures like Diana Ross. Sullivan discussed these experiences in a recent interview, which is set to be featured in the film.
“I was uncertain about its focus,” Sullivan said about the doc. “However, after conversing with co-director Zeb, who already possessed knowledge of my candle shop’s story, I agreed to participate.”
The documentary will also highlight the transformation of Sullivan’s candle-making passion into a thriving business. This venture commenced over 25 years ago when Sullivan created a candle for a sponsee from his 12-step recovery program. Over the years, Sullivan’s candles caught the attention of high-profile figures, ultimately leading to substantial orders that marked the start of a longstanding relationship.
