On Wednesday, the House of Representatives voted to censure Rep. Adam Schiff, West Hollywood’s congressman, for his assertions of collusion between former President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign and Russia. This vote marked only the third censure of a House member since the beginning of the century.
The resolution passed with a vote of 213-209, with all Republicans in favor, except for six who abstained, and all Democrats opposing it. Following the vote, Democrats gathered on the House floor and chanted “Shame!” and “Disgrace!” while House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a Republican from California, attempted to restore order. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, called McCarthy a “spiteful coward” and criticized his leadership as weak.
McCarthy then requested Schiff to present himself in the well of the House, and Democrats applauded and cheered as he approached. Amid interruptions from Democrats, McCarthy stated, “I have all night.” Schiff complied with the resolution’s requirement and stood in the well of the House. He received hugs and cheers from numerous Democrats who surrounded him. The resolution also mandates an investigation by the House Committee on Ethics into Schiff’s “falsehoods, misrepresentations, and abuses of sensitive information.”
This censure attempt was the second time the House sought to reprimand Schiff. The previous resolution, introduced by Rep. Anna Paulina Luna, a Republican from Florida, failed to pass due to its recommendation of a $16 million fine against Schiff, which was opposed by Democrats and 20 Republicans. With the removal of that language, the resolution passed along party lines. Luna argued that it was necessary to combat Schiff’s “lies” about Trump.
Schiff defended himself on the House floor and expressed gratitude to the Republicans for bringing forward the resolution. He stated, “To my Republican colleagues who introduced this resolution, I thank you. You honor me with your enmity; you flatter me with this falsehood.”
Schiff played a prominent role in Trump’s first impeachment proceeding related to a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where Trump sought to use military aid as leverage for an investigation into now-President Biden. Democrats attempted to table the censure resolution but were unsuccessful, with a vote of 218-208 along party lines.
House Republicans have used their majority in the current Congress to target Schiff previously. Earlier this year, McCarthy removed Schiff from the Intelligence Committee due to his promotion of claims of collaboration between the Trump campaign and Russia.
The only people voting for Schiff at this point belong in a jury box and the verdict should be original recipe or extra crispy. There’s a constitutionally prescribed punishment for treason.
