The Top 10 crime hotspots in WeHo

WEHOville analyzed the Sheriff Department’s year-to-date statistics to find out which city blocks and intersections appeared most frequently in their 2023 reports thus far. Here are our findings:

#1
8900 block of Santa Monica Boulevard — 165 crimes

The most crime-ridden location on our list also happens to be one of WeHo’s most iconic intersections — and a stone’s throw from the Sheriff’s Station. The rainbow crosswalk-connected block between Rocco’s and the former Pump Restaurant has been the site of 165 crimes including 38 pickpocketings, 7 aggravated assaults, 25 thefts, 5 strong-arm robberies and 5 hit-and-runs.

#2
7100 block of Santa Monica Boulevard — 121 crimes

The sprawling West Hollywood Gateway lot — everything between Target on La Brea to Mendocino Farms on Formosa — clocked 80 thefts, 6 assaults and 4 robberies. The area has been plagued by shoplifters. Target made headlines earlier this year when it installed locked cases to protect many basic consumer items like deodorant from thieves.

#3
600 block of Robertson Boulevard — 73 crimes

The 600 block of Robertson Boulevard — which includes The Abbey — was the site of 16 assaults and 18 thefts (9 pickpocketings). It was also the location of 6 “sex misdemeanors,” more than any other place in the city.

#4
8800 block of Santa Monica Boulevard — 72 crimes

It’s no surprise that No. 4 on our list — the long stretch of sidewalk in front of the LA Metro station — is right-next door to No. 1. 8800 Santa Monica Blvd. has seen 20 pickpocketings, 13 assaults and 11 thefts.

#5
7900 block Santa Monica Boulevard — 33 crimes

The north-facing block of SMB between Fairfax and Hayworth ranks fifth with 33 crimes including 8 assaults and 7 drug possession and under-the-influence charges. The Fairfax/SMB corner has been afflicted with significant urban blight.

#6
1200 block of La Brea  — 32 crimes

The home of the recently dedicated Shalom Peace Square saw a number of vandalism incidents and assaults.

#7/#8 (tie)
8400 block of Sunset Boulevard — 27 crimes
8400 block of Santa Monica Boulevard —  27 crimes

The 8400 blocks of both Sunset and SMB were crime hot spots. Six vehicle burglaries and a rape were reported on the most famous stretch of Sunset, while the block where the crime-plagued La Boheme sits had several robberies and assaults.

#9
7300 block Santa Monica Boulevard — 25 crimes

The block where Trader Joe’s is located suffered 6 burglaries and 7 instances of vandalism.

#10
8500 Melrose — 22 crimes

The block of Melrose between West Knoll and La Cienega (where the RealReal) is had 17 grand theft reports.

The sheriff’s data notes a total of 2,027 crimes so far in 2023. Readers should note this list excludes any reports taken outside of city limits.

Excellent work, Mr Garcia.

You should do this more often.

I see too many clubs catering to those who become a problem after the clubs close. These people don’t live here and exhibit behavior more common in their community. I lived thru “The House of Blues” nightmare. Vandalism, fights, unruly behavior overnight the “dump” was open. I celebrated the day the wreaking balls arrived. Let these clubs stay open but attach to the CUP they must control their cliental or face closure.

Replace this with EVERY big city in America run by DEMOCRATS! Democrats have been an absolute failure for Working Class Americans. Their individual self enrichment and being Globalist flunkies are their priorities.
Murder capitols, Homelessness, poverty, Third World illegal aliens, worse public schools, highest taxes, highest drug use.
I know this, California was FAR better run under a Democrat & Republican run state. History speaks for itself.

I note that most of the crimes are around places that serve alcohol. The city’s model is to balance the budget on alcohol sales and misery of others. Thank you, John Heilman.

Most of the crimes are in places where there are lots of people.

There are lots of people everywhere in the city. We are one of the most densely populated places southern California. We are #7. So your comment is not relevant. What is relevant is alcohol being within feet of most of the crimes. Thank you, John Heilman for balancing our budget on cocktail sales, alcoholism and misery.

Tom was spot on when he pointed out the most trafficked areas (NOT housing density) are the ones that have the most crime.

Very relevant!

I concur. Too bad WeHo is garbage, it has so much potential to not be garbage, but the SHE and the successor group, the SEB, have done so much to ruin it and hasten the decline.

It often is accidental when moving to a new city that one picks a place that turns out to be fairly safe. Nothing guarantees it, but the fewer enticing places to hang around too often or too long helps. Who moves into the your building or next door is another story’ but I was happy to see the hotspots listed and appreciate knowing where they are. And after three decades the “Prostitution Abatement Zone” signs are gone.

All obvious locations. A little police presence would go a long way.

But wait….they might arrest a POC for public urination and we can’t have that.

There really is such a thing as officer discretion, we’re not using robots for officers, yet anyways.. This is where the problems with police come in, within communities they’re patrolling. This is why you don’t make hostile issues out of someone urinating in an alley behind a bar, you selectively look the other way as an officer and focus entirely on more pressing matters of law enforcement. That’s the best social compromise.

Just kidding. I don’t want “officer discretion”. I want enforcement. If they see someone breaking ANY law…..arrest or cite them. Build a new jail where these people can be taken and treat their substance abuse while they’re there.

We’re destroying society tolerating this.

Have you ever met any one in LE who became a friend? I have and I am very choosy about my friends.

Just kidding? You’re funny. I have a funny story for you on this subject. I was riding a bike at night on the sidewalk once, not in West Hollywood, but not too far away, and a police car flashed the lights and pulled up next to me. I didn’t have a bike light, which apparently was mandatory for riding on a sidewalk even with no pedestrians around. While the two officers were dealing with me, a car drove by with no headlights. I laughed and pointed this out to the officers. They weren’t amused. Maybe you should run for Sheriff,… Read more »

You should make this into a public talk and one that goes to Law Enforcement people. Too many cowboys and cowgirls join the LE forces and want nothing more than to rope and tie up! The days when cops walked the beat and engaged with their neighborhood residents deterred crime and generated respect and camaraderie among PEOPLE – young and old. You make such an important and basic point; one that should come first in police training. Often wonder, when I chat with a LE person , which ones beat their kids and which ones are welcome at every table.

Half the crap staining my block is from one homeless guy, who’s a methed out illegal alien that flogs the bishop in public. The other homeless guy who posts up on my block only does so at night, and is very kind and respectful, and does his damnedest to not inconvenience the rest of us. Every so often, we leave him water or food. I’ll see him going to the outreach programs near the library or on Robertson every so often.
