The rainbow has reached the Mid-City.
The stretch of Santa Monica Boulevard roughly between Olive and Crescent Heights is now awash in multicolor light, bridging the lantern installations on the east and west sides of the city.
Crews were seen working on the lights Thursday evening near Connie & Ted’s. By Friday night the installation appeared to be complete.
The color-changing orbs were first introduced to the West Side in 2019; the project was extended onto the East Side in 2021.
City Hall says technical limitations prevent the entire length of SMB through West Hollywood from being illuminated.
For all portions of the hanging lantern system, City network communications is supplied from a secured source located within City property. In this case, City Hall will serve as the communication equipment hub. Should future projects be desired, additional study will be required to determine how such lantern systems may be possible without City owned property or a secure City network source available to serve as a communication hub for the system. While the technical limitations of the systems may currently pose a significant challenge to expansion, staff expect that technology will continue to evolve and other options may become available in the future. Staff will continue to monitor the market for alternative solutions.
T&G Global DBA St. Nick’s submitted the sole bid for the project in the amount of $298,206. The company has installed all of SMB’s lanterns thus far. The East Side’s bid was $329,114.
These gaudy Vegas lights are brought to us by amateurs who are trying to make up for having been rejected from the high school prom decor committee. Bourbon Street called, it wants its once a year Mardi Gras tackiness back. WeHo appropriated bad culture for year-round offense.
$300,000. to dress Mid City/SMB like Chinatown? At least Chinatown has authenticity, friendly people and delicious restaurants. This Lantern Hanging is depressing and tacky, the complete opposite of any sophistication WeHo wishes for. Sad ornaments on the dying tree that is West Hollywood.
It sends a “creepy red district” vibe……which ironically is right on brand.
This looks NOTHING like the red district lighting 😂
Ham, is that the best you could come up with?
It looks very tacky. It has a Bourbon Street trashy look.
I love it.
How much did that cost? Not a priority when people are laying in the street.
I notice you didn’t mention your plan, as I have, to get the people off the street.
Ifyou read the article you’d know. Btw: reading will get you a lot further than just scrolling and looking at pictures. If that’s your only news gathering, no wonder of city and country are in such disarray. Self imposed ignorance is not attractive.
This is fantastic!
So tacky.
How hypocritical of the City. The message of the colorful lanterns is “we welcome everyone”, but the reality is with rent control keeping people in their nasty ancient apartments for decades until they day they die, there is no room at the Inn. No vacancy for young gays fleeing oppression in far away states, plus they can’t afford $4,000 a month fair market rent along with deposits, just to get into a dumpy apartment here. The City favors their ageing population of people who made bad life choices of renting their entire lives, so now the rest of us have… Read more »
Wow, what a charming message. What could possibly make someone express such hatefully depressing rhetoric.
It’s really disgusting that you’re using “young gays fleeing oppression in far away states” as an argument against rent control. We know you dont want broke young people either. You would rather have millionaire condos owned by people who don’t even live here year round and contribute nothing to the neighborhood. You just don’t like rent control which shows you’ve made horrible choices by not investing somewhere without rent control (where gross slumlords can freely charge as much as they want).
WehoQueen, you really need to make better choices.
Seriously, you think that’s an argument against rent control? There are enough other arguments against rent control, no new ones needed. Actually, I want people here who can afford to pay the rent and afford to shop here. I don’t care if daddy is paying the rent for their kid, as long as it gets paid. I also want people here who know how to spell and who know how to use proper punctuation.
Okay time for you to move then!
Please move. Get your biter pathetic ass out of West Hollywood. Everything you write is hateful and derogatory.
If I wrote something factually incorrect, please advise. And learn to spell.
Everything you wrote in factually incorrect and has no basis in reality.
Btw, you’ve made plenty of spelling errors in your pathetic tirades against poor people. Make better choices!
“Fleeing oppression” in 2023…serious drama.
Blah blah blah. Same old story, different day. You say the same thing every day. It has gotten very old. We aren’t going anywhere. We didn’t make bad life choices. I think you did. We created WeHo. You didn’t.
Did you “create” it for the purpose of freeloading off people who contribute? I’m sorry you’re bored by my message. See, we’ve been waiting for you to say something interesting. When will it happen?
Dearest Weho Queen, I normally agree with your perspective and actually look forward to reading your thoughtful comments, but I must push back on this one. Where I take offense: “Old people who can’t afford to live or shop here, taking up desirable apartments that could go to more deserving people in need.” Who exactly is more deserving people in need? These Gen Z’s? After they’ve actually put in some real blood, sweat and tears for their community, then they’ll be deserving, as the elderly in our community have done already. It’s far time to give credit where credit is… Read more »
You ask a reasonable question. The “old people” I’m referring to aren’t here to build some paradise community. They are here for selfish reasons for their own personal greed and benefit: cheap rent for themselves. They are a drain on the community. They could care less about anyone else. For example, I recall when there has been some trouble in the wealthier Sunset Strip areas, like maybe from clubs, these old people freeloaders never once came to speak at a Council meeting about the problems going on a mile from where the pool old freeloading folks live. True, the wealthier… Read more »
WehoQueen Looks like you have it all figured out. I live in West Hollywood and we would love to have you as a neighbor. However if you are thinking of moving here please know that we welcome everyone here, including our rent control old people and their nasty ancient apartments.
