OPINION | Leaving L.A., an observation

Always wanted to be here in Hollywood. It was always my dream, like many.

As a teen growing up in Florida, I watched the “it” girls of the 2000s and many other celebrities frolicking thru the streets of West Hollywood and always wanted to experience the same places. I had an affection for Marilyn Monroe, and all of the old Hollywood history. So when I finally made it here in 2013, 1 was so excited and in the years that followed. I couldn’t find a reason to leave. So many other influences of international cultures as well. Incredible food and nightlife. Plus, the weather here is incomparable.

And there’s no denying that the way of thinking here feels fresh and creative.. and younger.

But as someone who’s lived in this area for 9 years, I can genuinely say I’ve seen it transform so much in that short time. 2020/COVID had a big impact on LA (just like every major city) but it seems the pandemic really pushed this city to it’s limits – and not only economically, but also by illuminating the lack of leadership on a local government level. I’m not going to get political, but Los Angeles needs balance. If there was ever a place that would benefit from a healthy 2-party system it’s Southern California. You can’t ignore huge issues like homelessness, and definitely not in the wake of a world-changing pandemic. However, there also can’t be a system of enabling that’s created. I lean quite liberal myself, and am so grateful for the resources more progressive cities like LA have to offer, but watching people go homeless and then be housed in historic hotels is just crazy to me.

Which brings me to another point, why doesn’t this city value it’s tourism? Approximate 50 million people visited Los Angeles in 2022, but when they get to Hollywood thev’re met with a horrendous experience.

Not only do they have to dodge the seedy “characters” trying to price gouge them for a tacky picture that will last 24 hrs on their Snapchat, but they also have to walk through literal piss and dirt to see their favorite stars on a sidewalk that has no other real focal points. Multiple historic theaters laying dormant makes no sense, and why anyone would let Pig & Whistle become a Mexican restaurant is beyond me. (Also, the vendors on the Walk of Fame have gotten ridiculous – there should not be propane tanks on makeshift kitchens lining the busy street. It’s a tragic accident waiting to happen. And where are the animal rights activists to get those snake handlers banned? )

Getting to the sign is a joke. The idea that it’s not illuminated at night in any way is absurd — but it’s also further proof that the city is oblivious to what it’s most iconic landmarks need to survive an era of skepticism and revelation. And when the TMZ Tour is the best value to see the city, you know it’s gotta be slim pickings. I won’t go into the lack of parking, or the traumatic experience that is the MetroLA system, but I have to assume city planning can’t be a priority when you have flash mob robberies bringing you worldwide shame.

I am going to be moving out of state, mostly because I can’t afford to be here anymore. My parents helped as much as they could, but it gets to a point where you look to get off the loop. People need to be paid what they’re worth, and not just the bare minimum that an employer can budget to maximize their profits. Greed is unfortunately a main currency in LA, whether it be blatant social climbing or literal sugar babies, so many people here are desperate to live in excess yet the majority of us are living paycheck to paycheck just so we can chase our childhood dreams. Speaking of people though, I won’t really miss anyone. There’s a coldness in LA that I find ironic being a born and raised New Yorker who always heard after moving to Florida, how “mean” people from NY are. It’s true. a NYr might have a more neurotic approach, but at least they’ll talk to you. People here are soooo consumed with themselves that they have zero capacity for others.

There’s a huge lack of self awareness and communication… in a city of aspiring performers and entertainers? Lol imagine that.

All that to say, I hope to be back one day. Call me a glutton for punishment, but I love California and I really have a special place for LA. My real wish is that some balance can be found in this city and many others.

Best of luck to all.

Carbon copy for me. I also hail from NYC then Miami to my sought after dream of living in Los Angeles. 10 happy years there but I too could simply not afford to be there anymore, and I had a great tech job. But i was just bleeding money. I made lifelong friends and maybe someday I can go retire there. But the city is in a deep decline like many others and I hope they can save it before it’s too late.

Freaking out about the LA megalopolis is nothing new, as THE ONION GUIDE TO THE 20th CENTURY points out.

For people like me (with rent ctrl) who can afford to stay we are left with all of our friends gone to placed they hoped were more affordable. Many have found that crime, homelessness and the rising cost of living follow them wherever they go!

You say, “People need to be paid what they’re worth, and not just the bare minimum that an employer can budget to maximize their profits”, when it is the high minimum wage that is destroying businesses. WeHo foolishly boasts that we pay the highest minimum wage in the nation! Clearly you have never owned or managed a business (just like most politicians) and have no idea the expenses and the risks involved in owning a business. Employers should not have to pay a worker more than the job is worth. He should not have to take into account what that… Read more »

You’re woefully incorrect on several assertions. Mainly that “capitalism” and “the ‘free market’ work every time.” Or that it’s always a “win/win.” “Always”? “Every time?” Laughable. Yours are factually incorrect statements. Also, perhaps you should better educate yourself on what the concept of minimum wage was when it was created. Its intention was that all should have, at least, a livable wage. That it could easily support one’s needs. This rhetoric that someone YOU deem as “low skilled” is somehow lesser or a second-class citizen not worthy of a comfortable life is disgusting & overall inhumane. And compassion is never… Read more »

Nope! You’re wrong … and I’m right!
You are emotionally vested in this topic and any further exchange with you would be a colossal waste of time.

Karen Bass is just another political hack like the dregs running with Hollywood belonging to the Democratic party which is destroying the entire United States under the leadership of the worst president ever to exist in the White House. Someone who cannot even find his own way except to set up millions of dollars offshore corporations for the Biden crime family and to finance that ludicrous war in the Ukraine. While here, in this country, do we see a hundred billion dollars being used to rebuild Maui or other parts of this country that is falling apart? Or bringing in… Read more »

This person may live in GA and is just trolling! Hey Dump BBB, tell me about west hollywood something only locals will know? Tell me about the lady who says “Roses” for example. I may have a goofy screen name, but google me and I DO exist in Weho! 🙂

No. all you have to do is watch the hearings on the hill everyday of the Biden Crime Family corruption of selling out America. Bank Records they now have-bank records on Hunter Biden payments from Russian, Kazakh oligarchs, total clears over $20 million, videos, and emails they now have. Bank records, videos, and emails don’t lie, Testimony under oath of Devon, Archer (who was threatened, and had to go into hiding) former partner of the Hunter Biden, and testified Joe Biden knew everything about all these deals and was in on these deals), dozens of FBI whistleblowers who came forward putting… Read more »

The Trumps & Kushners also have gotten payments from the likes of China & the Saudis (who I will remind you like to cut up journalists they don’t like).

Trump didn’t pay any income tax here in the US a few years but did in China. But I’m sure you have this same energy against them as you do the Bidens. Right? Otherwise you’d be a hypocrite. And in suuuuuure that’s not the case lol

“To have a functioning democracy in a republic-you need a educated citizenry.” Unfortunately you’ve stupid, clueless, brainless voters who don’t know who/what they’re voting for in LA, or CA. These voters listen to their lies, narratives and propaganda, The spread these lies with their corrupt minions in the press over and over again. Spread and tell lies enough voters believe the lie. Also they use Identity politics to divide citizens to stay in power. If anybody does tell the truth they smear and try to destroy you today.

I agree with this writer that the Hollywood district is a complete mess. The sidewalks are dirty and the cartoon characters asking for money is just unsavory and unsafe. Most people are there to see the Walk of Fame, but many of those names are unfamiliar to many sightseers. The Hollywood Ovation complex is nice, but it does not really represent Hollywood. It is just a huge shopping center. I wouldn’t blame the writer for leaving LA as the rents are horrendous and crazy unaffordable. With wages the way they are,you just can’t make it.The landlords are getting greedy because of all the demand for housing… Read more »

Don’t forget the walk of fame crime and the many empty storefronts in hwd/highland complex alone: build a bear workshop, willy wonka candies, the upper food court. And those are just the venues I saw walking into “Barbie.”

Do you think when you move out of L.A., there will be no greedy people elsewhere? My hunch is you weren’t able to freeload as well as you thought you could, and you didn’t like seeing the homeless freeload, cause you had some entitlement to those free apartments in historic hotels.

I have zero confidence in Karen Bass. She has pandered to the same group of “aggrieved” low lives that Garcetti did.

In Detroit the “productive” members of society had enough. They simply left. The tax base will leave LA just like it did in Detroit, Atlanta and Baltimore.

She is WORSE! Dumbas** voted for her because she is a female and part African American.
She is a verified Communist who visited Castro IN PERSON to offer her praise. Open borders, defund police, loser who didn’t do a DAMN THING for the poor district that she represented for so many years!
Democrats can take the next high speed train straight to Hell as far as I am concern. Just look at EVERY city they have destroyed. SF may never come back once the tax base leaves…Detroit 2.0 but worse.

You can’t compare LA to those other cities because nobody aspires to live there, they settle for that or less. People from all over the world, not just all over the nation aspire to live in LA, that’s why the demand is always going to be higher than the supply. Everyone in LA is replaceable.

Exactly. If you could get our mojo (our thing that makes us special) in Kansas City or Cincinnati they would get all the tourists and the creatives. PS I’m from Cincy don’t tell. Go WKRP!

You won’t be the last. One party rule has destroyed the state. There’s a total lack of common sense and balance these days.

Truth is, it’s not fun to live here. LA will follow SF….and at some point will become another Detroit if dramatic changes don’t happen (and we know they won’t).

People with means don’t need to live here. It’s easy to move.

TRUTH!
This was the mission of Democrats embracing massive illegal immigration. Nancy Pelosi is an insider trading con artist that is a kid glove fit for her racist, segregationist degenerate Pappy, know as the most racist mayor of Jim Crow South.
Just take a look at their policies since the 1990s and how they flooded and tore apart poor black communities with hundreds of thousands of illegal aliens.

Life is too short not to live where you want to and where you will be the happiest, if you have choices. You could make the case that nobody has to live in LA but the homeless, because of the great weather. Nobody else really has to, because the cost of living is less in most other places in the nation. Don’t prolong things, leave if you aren’t happy. Nobody else wants you around if you aren’t happy being here either.

Go live in Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, etc if you think a state run fully by Republicans would be so much better. They literally look like 3rd world countries in most of the state. You should feel right at home then, yeah?
