🎥 Sunset Boulevard street takeover near WeHo

Video journalist Keith Johnson of KNN captured this footage of an illegal street takeover on the 7600 block of Sunset Boulevard, near Curson Avenue on West Hollywood’s doorstep.

The takeover occurred at about 6:30 p.m. Sunday. More than 30 dirt bikes and ATVs were filmed running ramshod over the rule of law and snarling traffic. Angry drivers were left helpless on the road; no word on whether LAPD showed up to issue citations or disperse the illegal gathering.

Street takeovers continue to plague Los Angeles County as well as many metro areas across the country.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors this past week elevated its concern regarding street takeovers, prompting a unanimous vote to organize a symposium involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Los Angeles Police Department, county Sheriff’s Department, California Highway Patrol, and others.

This move comes in response to the growing safety issue posed by car enthusiasts performing dangerous stunts and speed exhibitions on major streets. Supervisor Holly Mitchell initiated the motion, aiming to schedule the symposium by February 28 and develop a plan of action within 60 days thereafter. The motion was backed by an increase in complaints about street takeovers over the past two years. The sheriff’s department alone received over 3,100 calls related to these incidents between January 2020 and July 2022.

Recent law enforcement efforts in Compton, Mitchell’s district, involved numerous arrests and vehicle impoundments during a street takeover weekend in September. Mitchell’s motion highlighted the tragic case of a fatal accident caused by a street takeover and emphasized the need to address the safety concerns associated with these events. Additionally, the supervisors expressed their desire to provide alternative venues for driving activities to deter participants from taking over public streets and neighborhoods.

Why does it take so long for policing authorities to respond to these? Also, these don’t just happen spontaneously, they are created and are probably online for anyone who’s clever enough and knows where to look. Apparently the Sheriff’s Department isn’t this clever and hasn’t yet figured how to stop these before they begin. Or infiltrate their organization.

Infiltrate their organization? These lowlifes don’t have an organization. they just
sporadically get together to give honest working people the middle finger. Maybe next time we could drop job flyers on them and they’ll quickly disperse.

They should lose the bike and face a $500 fine along with probation.

Thank you Alan. Looked all of these up and it seems a task force would need to be on the ready to deal with the eventualities of these takeovers. Since this was partly in LA would require cooperation of LAPD or LASD. The trick is to be able to infiltrate their organization(s) to be in on the location.

I hope someone was there to collect data for the next public safety study. Are these people West Hollywood residents?

Obviously other street takeovers have led to serious consequences. But all I see in this particular video is a bunch of people having a good time and providing some free entertainment. You want to live near the famous Sunset Blvd? Well here ya go! In the late 60’s it was hippies taking over Sunset, later it was street cruising, now there’s this. It’s not new.

Dumb…I’ve seen these jerks run over someone with their ATV walking in a sidewalk. Sent them to the ER. It isn’t entertaining. It is dangerous and annoying.

I remember when WeHo was safe and sane and respectable people lived here and visited here. John Heilman was the WeHo mayor during that time. I don’t recall him doing one unusual thing in all his time in office. I don’t know him nor any of the behind the scenes of that era, but I know WeHo was always safe, sane, and really fun for those many years. You think you’re gonna run into Boy George, Ellen, Pete Burns, Pink, Andy Bell, or anyone like that in WeHo today? Prolly not.

John Heilman was the symbolic mayor taking his turn in the rotation that gave each City Council member 1 year as titleholder who, as a single unit, had no more power or other distinction than any of the other 4.

This is not dissimilar to retail smash and grab antics. People automatically feel that due to the numbers f the miscreants, they can get away with nonsense like this. We need huge nets to drop over both of these groups. Just a thought.

It’s part of the Weho mentality “I want everything for free, and I don’t want to pay for anything cause the City owes me”.
