Boystown Media Inc, the owner of WEHOville and GayLife LA has elected to move from a California S corp to 501c3 non-profit. The company was founded in 2021 in the City of West Hollywood. The change will become effective 1/1/24.
The Board of Directors approved the shift in corporate status at its quarterly meeting to a ‘Public Benefit Corporation.’ Under California law a public benefit corporation is ‘not for any individual’s private gain.’ A public benefit corporation cannot distribute profits or dividends to any individual; it must solely benefit the public. The shift aligns the company with its goals to operate ‘for the benefit of West Hollywood residents and businesses’.
Subscriptions will also become tax-deductible under the new corporate status. The monthly subscription price beginning 1/1/24 will be $5 per month and $49 for an annual subscription.
In addition to the changes in corporate governance Brandon Garcia will assume the role of Managing Director effective immediately. Garcia is the current editor of WEHOville and overseas the creative direction, social media, and working with our advertising partners. Garcia is also a partner in the company.
My letter to the other partners was heartfelt, “I’m very proud of Brandon and what we have accomplished these past two plus years. We brought WEHOville home and cemented its place as the people’s voice for West Hollywood.”
“Brandon earned and deserves his chance to make his mistakes, trip once or twice, and build out the platform. I’m still going to contribute on a regular basis and hope to help do great things for the people of WeHo.”
“It is up to all of us to continue and expand the Board of Directors to other West Hollywood stakeholders and use our profits to serve those in the community. I want our advertisers and subscribers to know their support and the work we all do is for the good of community. We are here to celebrate West Hollywood.
Pragmatic and logical move Larry and congratulations Brandon. I do hope you rethink the programmatic pop-up road block ads not related to the site demographics as they cause a lot of issues with servers loading and delivering your website.
Howdy, Id suggest you use a pop up blocker or thank the pop ups for paying the bills, because we will close without 5000 a month in revenue to exist, nobody is taking cash out of their pocket to float this. And thats barely enough for the company to pay its web fees, taxes and allow anyone enough to live. Remember Hank Scott sold it and left, and so did the second buyer.
Thank you for your passion for West Hollywood.
Well deserved! Congratulations, Mr Garcia!
As a subscriber since the beginning, I hope this means no more aggressive pop up ads which in the last few days have only gotten worse and intolerable.
I could not agree more on the programmatic pop ups. Wehoville needs to review how they serve them and if they can do it better or stop. My user experience is bordering on terrible making me want to disengage with the site. That would be disappointing.
Thank you to everyone involved in WEHOville and your commitment to being a voice of the people in West Hollywood. It continues to be a much-needed antidote to the darkness that would otherwise cloud the machinations of West Hollywood officialdom. It would be nice to see elected, appointed, and employed public servants engage with people here (openly and honestly and not under pseudonyms), rather than malign the legitimate public discourse that happens when people use their voices to participate. The Fourth Estate is alive and well in West Hollywood!
Thank you for the work you do. Congrats to Brandon.
