  • 1831: Nat Turner is arrested for leading the bloodiest slave rebellion in United States history.
  • 1938: The War of the Worlds radio broadcast panicked millions of Americans.
  • 1990: For the first time since the Ice Age, Great Britain was connected with the European continent, via a new rail tunnel under the English Channel.

  • 1517: Protestant Reformation: Martin Luther publishes his Ninety-Five Theses in Wittenberg, Germany.
  • 1864: Nevada is admitted as the 36th U.S. state.
  • 1941: The United States destroyer USS Reuben James is sunk by a German U-boat, the first U.S. warship to be lost in World War II.

  • 1755: Lisbon earthquake: A massive earthquake and subsequent tsunami strike Lisbon, Portugal, killing an estimated 60,000 people.
