Adam Schiff loses endorsement of Burbank mayor over Israel support

Burbank Mayor Konstantine Anthony has rescinded his support for U.S. Representative Adam Schiff in the contest for the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the late Dianne Feinstein.

Schiff, who also resides in Burbank and is in a competitive race with multiple opponents including Representatives Katie Porter and Barbara Lee, initially received Anthony’s endorsement earlier this year. Although Anthony praises Schiff for his advocacy for women, LGBTQ communities, activists against gun violence, and labor unions, he has chosen to withdraw his endorsement due to Schiff’s stance on Israel’s conflict with Hamas.

Following recent violent incidents, Schiff made a public statement affirming Israel’s “right to defend itself,” expressing that the U.S. should fully support Israel in safeguarding its citizens and rescuing hostages. He described the situation as akin to Israel’s own 9/11, stating unequivocally that Hamas is a terrorist organization responsible for the mass murder of innocent Israelis and for taking hostages.

In contrast, Anthony, who has previously faced criticism for his involvement in a controversial private event, advocates for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict. He asserted that the only thing more hazardous than the current discourse in a Republican-majority Congress is full-scale war. Until Schiff aligns with this peace initiative, Anthony stated he cannot continue to endorse him for the Senate seat. He clarified that he will not endorse any other Senate candidate until Schiff issues a statement calling for peace, at which point he will reinstate his endorsement.

When contacted for a reaction to the withdrawal of the endorsement, Schiff had yet to respond.

The area that Schiff currently represents on Capitol Hill — California Congressional District 30 — includes West Hollywood. WeHo Mayor Sepi Shyne is among 19 candidates hoping to fill his seat.

Ms. Taylor- your kind hearted feelings are contrary to the history of the land. Please read a bit more history of the area and ask yourself why The Dome of the Rock sits on the site of Solomon’s Temple and Jews are not permitted to enter and must wail at the wall. This is a conflict that should not exist. And yet the Middle East is not an exception. Religion may offer solace and joy to humanity but the cost is nothing that strikes me as GODLY. The person who lobs the first stone is the aggressor. If a Prime… Read more »

Although I have strong opinions about this latest round of violence, I don’t want the race for the Senate to be focused on the conflict in Gaza as it may wind up getting Republican Steve Garvey elected.

Isn’t this the guy willing to get spanked? I am leaning Porter, but I think Schiff is fine without this guys endorsement.

Mayor spanky got this one right. Schiff still has a lot to answer for his strange relationship with Ed Buck, raising the question, was Buck some kind of blackmail operative for unknown political interests?

This line is remarkable: “…controversial private event, advocates for a ceasefire and a peaceful resolution to the conflict.”

Did Mr Schiff also call it an unprovoked act? \
How defensive is it when IDF crossed into Gaza to strafe civilians, including babies and women?
He supports war criminals.

Some people are sick.

The political parlor game of endorsements is a quaint relic of a bygone era. Endorsements are performative and meaningless combined with manipulative and vindictive. I ignore them.

Hmmm, Mr. Mayor appears to have proposed several head scratching ideas regarding policing & prisons but not a roadmap with which to realize them.

The mayor of Burbank has every right to weigh in to the horrible debacle that is Israel vs. Hamas, as Schiff is using the war as a campaign plank, but please don’t include the Palestinian people in the Hamas camp. Hamas is killing its own people; Genocide. That Israel is bent on mass destruction makes the once traditional siding obsolete and mis-informed. That we in the U.S. may not be the best persons to judge this conflict may be the most sound information I’ve personally received. This is a right vs right contest that will only end in boths major… Read more »

The mayor of Burank has no good reason to insert his anti-Israel biases into the race for California senator. His endorsement of anything going forward is laughable.

This is the guy who volunteered to get spanked at a Democratic Club function and was asked to resigned by some of his City Council colleagues. So not sure his endorsement is worth much.

I would never have given my endorsement of that liar in the first place. Still waiting for the evidence he said he saw with his own eyes. Flat out lie.

Except that he does.
Being against the wholesale slaughter of Palestinian civilians is a fine reason.
