The Melrose branch of the cannabis retailer Cookies is slated to shut its doors on November 7, as revealed by the company’s co-founder Berner, also known as Gilbert Milam Jr., via his online social platforms.
This impending shutdown signals at least the second instance of a Cookies outlet ceasing operations in 2023.
Efforts to negotiate with the property owner of the Melrose location have been strenuous but ultimately unsuccessful, as disclosed by Berner. He indicated that while the hunt for an alternative venue is active, finding a suitable new home for the store is expected to be a time-consuming endeavor. Berner also expressed gratitude to his Melrose associates for their dedicated efforts in attempting to retain the store.
In addition to its Los Angeles presence, Cookies operates a fashion boutique in Manhattan, New York, and has cannabis dispensaries in Las Vegas and San Francisco. The Melrose store initially launched to significant fanfare, attracting large numbers of customers and the anger of nearby residents.
The store became a target of vandalism and theft amid the civil unrest of spring 2020, sparked by the death of George Floyd. Amidst an overall slump in the cannabis market this year, Cookies has faced legal challenges. It has been the subject of litigation in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, with allegations from two groups of investors claiming that Milam, along with Berling and other leaders within the company, misappropriated investor funds for personal extravagance, an accusation largely denied by company representatives. The outcome of these legal disputes remains unresolved.
Earlier in the year, the landlord of Cookies’ Melrose Avenue property advertised the approximately 3,300 square feet retail space for lease, setting the rate at $7 per square foot, with availability beginning September 1.

Where’s Julie Newmar? I wanna see her dancing in the street the day they close!
Does this mean they will remove the barrier on Kings Road now?
Hallelujah! 👏
Maybe a real cookie store will go in there. That I could support! This place was a disaster from day one. The city should have shut them down for false advertising!!!
Finally some good news.
Good Riddance! Hopefully, a nicer business will open up at that location…one where the clientele don’t show up to wreak havoc on the surrounding neighborhood. A high end restaurant, health club, meditation center, cafe, or any other business that enriches the community would be great additions to that corner.
The space housed a number of very nice restaurants over the years. They’re all gone. $23,000/mo for rent can’t be supported by anything BUT a pot shop.
Thank you, Jebus. Now, shut ’em down all across L.A.
Best news I’ve heard all day
