PUBLIC COMMENT 🗣️ Keep the VIBEZ alive

Jimmy Palmieri speaks about the VIBEZ event in West Hollywood during Public Comment at City Council’s Monday night meeting.

“About eight, nine, or ten years ago, all of the council members unanimously—and every year since—have approved. Boom, now rebranded as VIBEZ. I have to ask, in the next staff report, if you could please add language that would make this a regular West Hollywood event.

The sad thing this year was that it was trying to be pushed out of West Hollywood, all the way to Hollywood and Highland, by the way, and I had to jump through hoops and go through these barriers and speak to people that I really, at this stage, don’t think I should have to do. This is one of the most successful recovery programs we have on the night that is the biggest relapse of the year. All of you have been there, used—there’s never been a fight because there’s no booze, there’s no drugs.

You’ve all participated in judging contests, and I can remember sitting with Lauren for two hours in the freezing cold. I mean, this is just too long for me to have to fight every single year for barriers that staff always puts up. I’m sure that most of you don’t even know that it’s happening, which is why I’m saying it out loud. I’ve never said it out loud before, but this year just was too much—being pushed out of West Hollywood, being told that Fiesta Hall was not going to be available to us, being told that people were complaining, which is a fabrication because it would be documented, and I would have known the next day. If someone complained, the loudest noise last year from VIBEZ was the thunder and the torrential storms that we were having. There was no noise from the event. So, please, all of you have supported this, let’s make this a regular, permanent West Hollywood project.”

Boom/Vibez was always a lot of fun. I’m not sure why the Institute for Public Strategies withdrew from the previous year’s event, but in my opinion, the City should be the one funding this program directly because space bar clicker that organization is dubious. I hope that this turns into a yearly tradition!

Vibez/Boom was always really fun. I don’t know why Institute for Public Strategies pulled out from last year’s event, but IMO that org is sketchy and it’s better for the City for fund this program directly. Hoping to see this become a permanent annual event!
