The L.A. County Sheriff’s Department has released October’s crime data ahead of their presentation at the West Hollywood Public Safety Commission’s meeting Monday night. With only two months of data left to be gathered for the year, WEHOonline crunched the numbers to see how 2023 is shaping up compared with 2022 so far.
With two months of data yet to be gathered, there have been fewer Part 1 crimes this year than last, down ⬇ 8.27% from a total of 2,250 in 2022. The year’s Part 1 crimes currently stand at 2,064 but that number will likely rise by year’s end to a figure comparable to 2022’s.
When broken down by category, the numbers tell a different story. Certain Part 1 crime categories such as rape, robbery and burglary have already surpassed their 2022 totals and will almost surely continue to climb before the end of the year. Meanwhile, other crime categories such as aggravated assault and arson look likely to come in below their 2022 numbers.
Rising Crimes
- Rape: There’s been increase of 🔺26.32% in rape cases, rising from 19 in 2022 to 24 cases in 2023.
- Robbery: Overall robberies increased by 🔺11.25%, from 80 cases in 2022 to 89 cases in 2023.
- Strong Arm Street Robbery: Increased by 28.57%.
- Strong Arm Robbery – All others: Increased by 20.00%.
- Burglary: There has been a 🔺10.95% increase in burglaries, from 274 cases in 2022 to 304 cases in 2023. This encompasses residential burglary and other types of burglaries (commercial, mailrooms, secure garages, etc.), with other burglaries showing a notable increase.
- Other Burglary: Increased by 12.18%.
- Other Burglary – Commercial: Increased by 23.75%.
- Shoplifting: An increase of 🔺11.50% has been observed in shoplifting cases, with distinct categories like armed Estes robbery, strong-arm Estes robbery, grand theft shoplifting, and petty theft shoplifting showing varied trends.
- Strong Arm Estes Robbery: Increased by 214.29%.
- Grand Theft Shoplifting: Increased by 23.68%.
- Petty Theft Shoplifting: Increased by 12.69%.
- Grand Theft Unlocked Vehicle: Increased by 🔺80.77%.
- Grand Theft Vehicle Parts: Increased by 🔺78.85%.
- ADW Peace Officer: Increased by 🔺150.00%.
- ADW Knife: Increased by 🔺14.29%.
- Petty Theft Unlocked Vehicle: Increased by 🔺9.68%.
- Grand Theft Bike: Increased by 🔺5.88%.
Falling Crimes
- Aggravated Assault: This category is showing a decrease of ⬇17.95%, from 156 cases in 2022 to 128 cases in 2023. This includes various subcategories of assault such as domestic, ADW (Assault with Deadly Weapon) Gun, Knife, Other Weapon, Hands/Fist/Feet, Peace Officer, and Child. Notable changes include a significant drop in ADW Gun cases (58.82% decrease) and an increase in ADW Peace Officer cases (150%).
- Theft from Motor Vehicles: This category has experienced a slight decrease of ⬇2.27%. It includes vehicle burglary, grand theft from unlocked vehicles, petty theft from unlocked vehicles, grand theft of vehicle parts, and petty theft of vehicle parts.
- Vehicle Burglary: Decreased by ⬇20.22%.
- Petty Theft Vehicle Parts: Decreased by ⬇20.00%.
- Other Theft: Decreased by ⬇22.12%, from 868 cases in 2022 to 676 cases in 2023.
- Grand Theft Pickpocket: Decreased by ⬇38.71%.
- Petty Theft from Buildings / Other: Decreased by ⬇16.03%.
- Auto Theft: Auto thefts have decreased by ⬇12.58%, from 151 cases in 2022 to 132 cases in 2023.
- Arson: There have been fewer cases of arson in 2023, a decrease of ⬇17.65% from 17 cases to 14 cases.
- Armed Estes Robbery: Decreased by ⬇85.71%.
September to October data
The department received nearly 100 more calls for service in October. Felony arrests increased, while misdemeanor arrests decreased.

The department has begun publishing statistics about their encounters with homeless people. Notably, not one person out of the 52 who were offered services by the sheriffs accepted them.

Part 2 crimes in October were down slightly from September. Non-aggravated assaults dipped below 20 for the first time since the summer, and only one misdemeanor sex offense was recorded last month, down from 7 in September.

The quality of life in West Hollywood has been on the decline for the past 20 years, mostly due to the dangerous transients and bums in our neighborhoods. I’m afraid to walk down Santa Monica ‘Blvd. in broad daylight.

I take comfort in the fact that we have guys on bikes to protect us! 🙄
So basically a lot of crime has increased but our city of West Hollywood that always has over $150 million in our general fund does not want to spend an additional $10 to $20 million more for more Sheriff’s deputies? Puh-leeze! Seriously? Really?
