DEAR WEHO 📬 Hold off on approving Somni2’s later hours

The co-captains of the Norma Triangle Neighborhood wrote in to request that a decision on allowing a new restaurant to stay open later be pushed back until concerns are answered.

Dear Commissioner Maricich,

Last week I sent you an email stating Bobbie Edrick’s and my full support for a new proposed restaurant (SOMNI, Item 5A Community Development Meeting 11/14) here in the Norma Triangle neighborhood. Bobbie and I wanted to contact you once again in support of Norma Triangle resident Kate Bartolo’s email that was sent to staff today (attached below) requesting a continuance of tomorrow’s meeting.

Kate and the adjacent neighbors bring up valid points that need clarification.

Please consider Kate’s email below and know that she has the full support of the Norma Triangle Neighborhood behind her efforts.

Thank you for your time and consideration,

Best Regards, Jim Banks & Bobbie Edrick
Co-Captains, Norma Triangle Neighborhood

From: Kate Bartolo

On behalf of Norma Triangle resident Kenny DiGregorio, I am writing to request the support of the Norma Triangle Neighborhood Association for a continuance of tomorrow’s scheduled public hearing on the 9045 Nemo Project. This request for a continuance, to be made at the hearing, is subject to the decision of the Planning Director. Our aim is not to impose a costly delay on the Applicant but to address the concerns of a homeowner who only recently became aware of the original approval and the amended request for the project.

Should our discussions with the impacted resident not reach a mutually satisfactory resolution in writing prior to the hearing, we will seek a continuance. We recognize the merits of the project, including its proposed use, the skilled operator, and significant property improvements aimed at minimizing noise and other impacts. The commitment of the Applicant to use the adjacent surface parking lot exclusively for valet parking is also noted.

However, there are unresolved issues that need attention:

  1. Selection of construction materials to ensure minimal noise impact.
  2. Discrepancies between the Applicant’s narrative in the April 19, 2023, application and statements made during two site meetings with a total of 5 residents. Notably, the application suggests extended operation hours and a broader use of the outdoor patio than what was represented in these meetings.

It is crucial for Mr. DiGregorio and other neighbors to have clarity on these matters to avoid future surprises and undue impact. We note that the plans indicate more seating on the patio than the interior, which raises concerns.

We are optimistic about resolving these issues before the hearing to avoid delaying the application review process. A meeting with the Applicant, their representative, and the architect is scheduled for today to further discuss these matters.

Sincerely, Kate Bartolo

28-year resident, Norma Triangle
Past Chair/Co-Chair, Norma Triangle Neighborhood Association

You know what? I’ve lived in the Norma Triangle for 30 years, and I’ve never been invited to participate in any election for officers of the “Norma Triangle Neighborhood Association”. These self-appointed “officers” should perhaps pay some attention to establishing their bonafides before presuming to speak on behalf of residents.

The Norma Triangle does not have an “association” and there are no officers. They are volunteers that give off their time. There is a list you can get on to obtain info on what is happening in the neighborhood. If you’re not aware / not on the list, contact city staff to get the contact info. If you’ve lived in the neighborhood for 30 years you should be aware of all of this.

Oh, I see. So they just get to call themselves chair, co-chair, and captains when writing letters to city hall? They’re not really officers, they’re just cosplaying?

Every neighborhood watch has captains. They are volunteers and usually do it because they care about the neighborhood and very few people step up. Perhaps when Ms. Bartolo signed her name she misspoke or that neighborhood did have an association….but it has not had one in at least 20 years. You say you have lived in the Norma Triangle for 30 years…how are you so unaware? Vicious words to those that volunteer their time to help their community is baffling. Why don’t you get away from the keyboard stop attacking people and volunteer your own time for the betterment of… Read more »

Yes, I have indeed lived here for 30 years. And I am very aware that Bobbie emails items of interest, which I’ve received for many years. Sometimes I agree with what she writes, sometimes I don’t. What rankles is that she generally presents her personal opinions, but covers herself in the mantle of the “Norma Triangle Neighborhood”, on whose behalf she does not speak. I don’t recall her canvassing for opinions before writing, and I greatly dislike self-appointed unelected people presuming to speak on my behalf. As you’re evidently so well connected, can you tell me if any of the… Read more »

The city bureaucracy must start to weigh the concerns of residents most heavily impacted by these decisions above all else. Zero room for negotiation on the rights of those who live here to their right to peaceful enjoyment of their homes.

This Is truly crap, I’ve lived in the Norma Triangle for 18 years. Where the f—k where these people when the Palm was torn down and 9001 Santa Monica went up? 2 years became 4 and the new Resturant has added another 2 years. I’ve been constructioned and trucked and constructioned again. Nemo Street already had an art gallery, the Phillips go in with no commotion. Let the damn resturant go in.

Apparently you too are not well informed. Contact city staff to get on the Norma Triangle neighborhood email list. If you’ve been here for 18 years, you should know how involved the neighborhood was during the Palm redevelopment project.
(ps. the neighborhood has no control on how long a project takes to be built.)
