The Transgender Advisory Board of the City of West Hollywood invites the public to the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance ceremony. This significant event is scheduled for today, November 19, 2023, at 6 p.m.
The Transgender Day of Remembrance is a solemn occasion to honor and remember those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender violence. The program will include a reading of names, memorializing individuals who have been tragically murdered as a result of such violence.
Observed as part of the City of West Hollywood’s annual recognition of Transgender Awareness Month, this event aligns with the nationwide observance every November. The Transgender Day of Remembrance was initiated in 1999 by transgender advocate Gwendolyn Ann Smith. It began as a vigil to honor Rita Hester, a transgender woman who was killed in 1998, and has since grown into an annual tradition commemorating all transgender people lost to violence since Rita Hester’s death.
The event is open to everyone and free of charge, reflecting the city’s commitment to inclusivity and recognition of the transgender community.

Very uncalled for ❗ Trans people are the victims of the highest rates of violent hate crimes perpetrated against them and, some of them are Jewish. The “proud boys” a dangerous right-wing neonazi group have been very active at numerous LA County School Board meetings to undermine LGBTQ+ rights in Public Education and, have engaged in serious violence & intimidation.
Making a public spectacle of one’s self in appearance and behavior encourages criticism keeping folks from living productive respectable lives. Each individual has the opportunity to set the stage for how they desire to be treated.
