DEAR WEHO 📬 Plummer Park restrooms are an abomination

If we are, indeed to have 24/7 public toilets, then maintenance MUST be better than what we have now. The pics are of the bathrooms on the exterior of the community center at Plummer Park, taken randomly. There are two at that location and the second one on two different occasions, was locked with apparently an individual holed-up inside.

I am firmly in favor of having facilities available but I have serious concerns about the sanitation and safety of the these facilities. I am of the opinion that we should not ask yet another thing of Block by Block to provide the safety to patrons of the bathrooms.  Even in elementary schools there are such things as “bathroom monitors.” Quite frankly, the public bathrooms are not safe or clean NOW during the day.  Please think long and hard about the prospect of these overnight facilities and please increase awareness and response time of the current maintenance crew.Sincerely,Stephanie Harker

P.S.So, I went to have a look at the public restrooms today at about 4:00pm. The one that was clogged was locked (hopefully awaiting repairs and cleaning) so I checked the one that was locked on Monday and this is what I found:

A great piece on the legacy of Mayor Shyne’s legacy and obsession with unisex public restrooms. The anti-urinal 3, probably the most loathed politicians in the history of West Hollywood, Shyne, Erickson and Horvath responsible for the new toilet laws. I’m surprised they haven’t put a monument up to their toilet achievements in front of City Hall.

Thank you Stephanie Harker! The only way West Hollywood government and staff will listen is by observing existing facilities that are already poorly maintained. The staff has recommended a 6 figure cost to keep these facilities open 24/7. Ridiculous! They can’t even maintain them as is. How many homeless can we provide housing for instead of 2 extra security staffers and cleaning staff over the years at this cost?

West Hollywood needs to do better!

OMG you all act as if you’ve never seen a dirty bathroom. Ever used a Port-O-Let at a concert or festival? It’s WAY dirtier and I’m sure WAY smellier. lol Give the people here a break. Yes thank you for the important feedback. Now let the city work on resolving the issue. Many cities now have self cleaning restrooms Watch this video of the program in San Francisco where the cost to the tax payers is $0. Plus the company that installed them also maintains them. Something we may consider across the city? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmFve_DI5mI

What a mess! Thank you Stephanie for letting us know that this is happening!
Thanks to you, our city can’t ignore this like they ignore all the other problems they don’t feel like dealing with.
They allowed the scooters in before they had any of the logistics figured out. We can’t let them do the same thing with this highly problematic program!
If the bathrooms ever do get cleaned up, I know who we should be flushing first!!!

Thank you to Stephanie Harker for drawing attention to this serious issue. Without citizen advocates constantly holding the bureaucracy’s feet to the fire on issues of the nuts and bolts of sound municipal governance, our once-fair hamlet will continue to devolve into an unlivable mess. Bravo, Stephanie!

If indeed we move to 24 hour bathroom availability at our parks, then Shyne, Erickson and Beyers should have to use the facilities at each park at least twice a week and also clean the toilets at the parks once a week. These Kum-by-yah wanna be politicians have no damn clue because their entitlement keeps them clean and safe. Catch a clue city council, you’re creating a bacteria and drug idled monster. So gross.

I think WEHO may want to provide some assistance to people who do not have a home with a toilet…call me crazy but I think we do. There are companies that provide decks of public toilets for special events, construction projects, etc.  They are their toilets and they keep them up. WEHO DOES NOT NEED OR WANT TO BE IN THE PUBLIC TOILET BUSINESS IN MY OPINION.  This outsourcing option may be pricey but it would be worth it. We can afford it — if it works. We, as a city probably DO want to have such a service but we do not want to be in that… Read more »

Disgusting. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to know the problems that are coming with the bathroom soon to be opened 24/7.

This is why there are no “public restrooms” in America. This was figured out 80 years ago. Time for weho to pay attention to history.

Yes! We should always vote for leadership that supports the public good, not for political opportunists. If we make a mistake, we should vote to correct it forthwith.

I believe around 90% of the people who use those public toilets are either non-Weho residents (Plummer Park is virtually surrounded by the City of Los Angeles), or the homeless. What does any expect? Of course the Sepis of the world, won’t be satisfied until the taxpayers pay to wipe every user when they are done. I’m sorry to say, but until we rid ourselves of the Sepi, Chelsea and Erickson virus, we should close all public toilets in the city. Everything is a losing battle until the cause is gone.
