According to the article, Erickson opposed screening the film. This should have been an occasion that all council members should have supported outright from the standpoint of gaining knowledge rather than castigation based on presumption. There could possibly have been a more extensive seminar instead of resuming they had a hot potato.

A child is killed on average every 10 minutes in Gaza, according to the World Health Organization, accounting for israeli air & artillery strikes, and children shot by snipers. In November 1940, 380,000 Jews were sealed in the Warsaw ghetto by nazis resulting in 80,000+ Jews who died from the conditions brought on by the siege alone. Israel is now before the International Court of Justice in the Hague to defend itself against the crime of genocide brought by South Africa. Speaking out against the tactics of the invasion of Gaza is not antisemitic. But using false and inflammatory statistics is irresponsible and counter-productive and undercuts constructive discussions of how we reach a cease fire. Whatever the numbers, the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and 20,000 mostly non-combatant Palestinians represent individual tragedies that can, and should, be equally mourned.
The wanton mass killings of people for any reason indeed should all be mourned. However, there is a conspicuous difference in scope here. The 1,200 Israeli deaths were perpetrated by an act of evil terrorists. The 24,000 Palestinian deaths were an act of revenge by Israel, but against innocent, blameless Palestinian citizens.
