Permit hurdles delay opening of Something About Her again

Vanderpump Rules stars Ariana Madix and Katie Maloney have been hit with a new setback that will again delay the opening of their sandwich shop, according to the U.S. Sun.

A source told the Sun, “It’s a cluster fuck. It’s a lot of back and forth with city officials. Taking over this location has been bad luck from the beginning.”

Originally, the shop was set to feature a distinct outdoor patio and a vibrant yellow and white awning, as revealed in photos from June 2023. However, due to changes in city permit requirements, the duo had to dismantle these elements. They are now in the process of seeking a new permit for a modified outdoor dining space and canopy that comply with the updated regulations.

The interior of the shop, which was previewed by The U.S. Sun, presents a cozy ambiance with grey plush chairs, teal and gray pillows, and French-inspired decor. The space also includes a retail section with olive and tea jars, and a counter displaying fresh sandwiches and baked goods.

Despite the exterior overhaul, the interior appears ready for guests, though further modifications are necessary to meet health department standards. This includes replacing the flooring to comply with open food service requirements, which has escalated costs and complexities for the owners.

The process of opening Something About Her has been ongoing since July 2021, with Bravo fans eagerly anticipating its launch. The shop has even been featured on Vanderpump Rules, with co-stars sampling its offerings.

As they navigate these challenges, Madix and Maloney have been promoting their venture through Something About Her merchandise, including sweatshirts, T-shirts, hats, and socks. However, the opening remains in limbo, with the team awaiting final approvals to commence operations.

Did the city provide proof that the regulations had changed before the business submitted their plans? Or did the city approve the plans before the passing of this supposed new regulation? It may be worth looking into this and asking the city for proof. I remember reading somewhere that Danny Rivas changes the municipal code to fit his personal agenda and it wouldn’t b surprising if this “updated regulation” was one of them. The captain of the ship, David Wilson, needs to go. We are losing long standing businesses and this is happening all under him. Fire David Wilson, Daniel… Read more »

It was a restaurant this time last year I think it not too long ago. How could the rules have changed so much since the previous restaurant opened only a few years ago?

I would think that if you rent a space that was previously a restaurant you wouldn’t expect to have multiple building changes needed.

It shows how hard it is to open a business with the quickly changing rules and regulations.

West Hollywood just recently changed what is allowed with “out zones”, which use public sidewalks as part of seating for restaurants, due to phasing them out.

This space always had an outdoor patio. it is not the same thing that you are talking about. They never used the sidewalk.

West Hollywood needs to make opening a business here a lot less of a hassle. This was a restaurant before…shouldn’t be that many hoops to jump through to remodel an existing restaurant space. Bad enough we have the highest cost to do business but to make it so un-business friendly is just adding to the issue. I’ve never seen so many empty store friends along SM Blvd. Really sad and upsetting. More homeless, more empty store friends…really a downward spiral. Hoping John Erickson leads the way to change course.

I’m surprised anyone opens a business here. They all seem to take years to open and then they last about half the time it took to open. Kale Me Crazy I doubt will make it and it took forever to open. Sad.

The major reason so many places close quickly is they are under-funded. Business models suggest not expecting a profit for up to two years after opening; if you don’t have the financing, you’re in trouble for sure. No matter where you open a business, this is the model that should be followed.

Wow, it really sounds as if they paid no attention to any of the codes needed to open a restaurant. A sense of entitlement comes through.

Agreed! Is the City supposed to bend over backwards because they were on Vanderpump Rules? Reality show “stars” still have to play by the rules. Go figure.

The city does bend over backwards for certain establishments. Remember Danny Rivas did not want the code officials to touch TomTom or Pump and purposely allowed them to continue doing business without permits. I’m curious to see what will happen.

Danny Rivas should be fired immediately.
