Iran launches attack on Israel

The Israeli military reported that Iran initiated a significant drone attack targeting Israel.

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated that the drones, part of a larger assault possibly including missiles, are expected to take several hours to reach their destinations.

Israel has strategies ready to counter these drones, Hagari confirmed.

This assault, involving numerous drones, follows the recent killing of a high-ranking Iranian officer at their embassy in Damascus by Israel, an act which heightened anticipations of a retaliatory response from Tehran.

“Our air force’s defense and offense mechanisms are fully alert, with many aircraft patrolling the skies, ready to act. We are closely coordinating our response with our main ally, the U.S.,” Hagari elaborated.

In preparation for the attack, U.S. defense officials, including Gen. Michael Kurilla, commander of U.S. Central Command, and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who spoke with Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi, have been in close discussions with Israeli counterparts. President Joe Biden, informed of the situation, plans a meeting with the National Security Council later in the day.

“The attack is projected to unfold over several hours,” stated Adrienne Watson of the National Security Council. “President Biden has reiterated the U.S.’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, affirming support for its defense against Iranian aggression.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. has enhanced its regional military presence, deploying several warships capable of intercepting air threats.

This includes two destroyers and a cruiser in the Red Sea, which have been active in countering drone and missile attacks from Yemeni Houthi forces on commercial vessels. Additionally, the U.S. has bolstered air defenses in Iraq in response to attacks on American bases by Iranian-supported militias.
