DEAR WEHO 🏳️‍🌈 Trans advocates also deprived of Pride community funds

I am Nahshon Dion, founder of TRANSBRATIONS Arts Collective. Jazzmun Crayton, a member and co-director of TRANSBRATIONS Arts Collective, and I applied for separate Weho Pride community grants, but we were rejected. My project was a tribute to the late Ivan Daniells III and other recently deceased community members to be hosted by Ebony Lane. Jazzmun was also seeking funds to screen her documentary “In Full Bloom Transcending Gender.” Both of our events were going to be hosted in Weho and free for the public to attend.

Jazzmun and I are deeply disappointed that we were rejected for funding and even more disappointed, confused, and disturbed to learn that 47 groups and organizations applied for the program, but only 14 were selected, and only $77,240 of the $150,000 was allocated. We were told that you were unable to accommodate the funding requests. On what basis are you unable to accommodate our funding requests despite the fact that $72,760 in your budget remains unspent? Why are community groups not receiving all of the public funds that are set aside to be dispersed for this calendar year? Why is all of the money not being used for the purpose of what it has been allocated for? If the money is not used this year, what happens to it?

I believe I am correct in stating that this was also an issue in 2023 when Weho Pride community grants were awarded; only half of the funding was allocated.

TRANSBRATIONS Art Collective is also thankful to Brandon Garcia and Weho Online for publishing the details regarding Weho Pride Community grants. Thank you for reading my email.

Nahshon Dion is the author of a forthcoming untitled memoir and Producer and Host of TRANSBRATIONS, a YouTube show.

Tax payers should be funding road paving, trash collection, police and fire etc. This is something that should be funded privately.

This is a problem. Why would the government not use all the money that has already been designated for grants? Is the city keeping it? Where does it go?

I applied for a Weho Pride community grant to create a Pride display about the awesome gay men of rock, including Rob Halford, Freddie Mercury, and Desmond Child. My application was rejected. Who do I complain to about this issue?

This sounds awesome. I hope you include Bob Mould too. Please don’t leave out his influence on the punk/alternative scenes.

You are not entitled to taxpayer money! The entire program should be scrapped and the money put toward projects that help the majority of residents and taxpayers.
