Danny Hang joins City Council race

Business License Commissioner Danny Hang has entered the race for West Hollywood City Council.

Born in the San Gabriel Valley to Chinese-Vietnamese refugees, Hang is the son of a union machinist who was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 725. Hang’s mother, an immigrant entrepreneur, owned a nail salon that contributed to their family’s pathway to the American middle class.

Hang graduated from Loyola Marymount University and pursued a double master’s in Social Work and Gerontology at the University of Southern California. Hang began his career at the Social Security administration, handling supplemental security income benefits for people with disabilities and older adults. He currently works in disability retirement for Los Angeles County.

Hang has served on the West Hollywood Disabilities Advisory Board the Commission on Judicial Nominees Evaluation by the State Bar Board of Trustees and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Asian American & Pacific Islander Advisory Board. Additionally, he is a member of the Executive Board for Asian Democrats of Los Angeles County.

As a Business License commissioner, Hang voted to deny Heart WeHo later hours of operation but voted in favor of allowing them for Doughbrik’s Pizza. He was appointed to the commission by Councilmember Sepi Shyne and donated her to congressional campaign. He recently defended Mayor John M. Erickson’s taxpayer-funded trip to Paris.

Hang lives in West Hollywood with his cat, Piper. Other contenders for the two open seats on Council this November are the incumbent mayor, Public Safety Commissioner George Nickle and activist West Seegmiller. Shyne is not running for re-election.

There are a few commenters on here who don’t want Danny Hang to run for city council because he was appointed by ex-mayor Sepi Shyne.I am thinking I would give him a chance if he can prove he is his own man,not under the control of Shyne.

Although his associates are ultra-orthodox Party gatekeepers; I’ll look forward to hearing his platform on the issues, and withhold judgement until then.

Here’s how I vote as a gay man in WeHo: 1. Has he ever done drag or plan to show up at the office dressed as Lady Gaga? No? Got my vote. 2. Will he constantly lament about how difficult it was growing up gay and endlessly talk about his personal issues. No? Got my vote. 3. Will he make “Express Yourself” the new city anthem? No? Got my vote. 4. Is his only concern to help improve the lives of all residents gay, straight, black, white, male, female, etc.? Yes? Got my vote.

The Sepi Shyne connection is a non-starter for me, as is the reliance on identity politics. Also, this dude smacks of the incestuous cabal of party club politics and that is completely toxic. No thanks. Independent minds, please.

Would love if you stopped using anti-semitic tropes. I’ve pointed it out to you several times and you continue to double down. Especially in these times where that word is a hot topic. Enough is enough.

You’re the only anonymous troll making it a hot topic, as with many other issues in toxic, intellectually lazy anonymity. I’m sticking to the definition provided by Britannica, and other solid, scholarly sources. Good luck with your noble efforts at changing the meaning of a solid word.

What is interesting is that WEHOonline reported correctly about his connection to both Sepi Shyne and John Erickson. However, other news sources reporting on his candidacy, have left that completely out!

The Sepi Shyne connection is disappointing. Surely we can do better.

I wonder if there is a strategy here to get more people to run so that that the anti-Erickson vote can be split among so many candidates that Erickson walks away with a win, even though most people voted against him?

The worst thing he could do in his pitch to become a council member is mentioning the two most dreadful people ever elected to office in West hollywood. John Erickson and Sepi Shyne.

Compared to Sepi, John Erickson is like Alexander Hamilton.

Anyone that is associated with Sepi Shyne should be a hard NO to vote for

He lost my vote. Supported Sepi Shyne and thinks that tax payers should pay for John Erickson and friends to fly to Paris on our dime. No thanks. That trip to Paris during the Olympics is going to cost 5 X what the mayor told us it will cost. It is totally unnecessary.
