Pickle packed a punch at West Hollywood’s second annual Jose Sarria Drag Pageant on Wednesday evening at the Aquatics & Recreation Center terrace, which ushered in the start of Pride celebrations in the city.

WeHo’s first Drag Laureate showed her stage savvy and comic timing as host of the event, which featured a streamlined set of contestants than last year’s, which made for a smoother, more dynamic program.

This year’s crown was awarded to Queen Angelina, who sang a brilliant version of Selena’s “No Me Queda Mas” in a gender binary half-mariachi/half-folklorico costume before delivering a rendition of “I Will Always Love You” on violin.

The entire lineup of contestants displayed a diverse and high-quality range of talents, including acrobatics, comedy and musical performance.

The event was co-sponsored by the Imperial Court and Los Angeles County Supervisor Lindsey P. Horvath, Third District. The pageant honors José Sarria, the first openly gay person to run for office in the United States. Sarria, known in the drag community as the Widow Norton, was instrumental in paving the way for Harvey Milk’s historic run for office. He also founded the Imperial Court System, one of the oldest and largest LGBT organizations worldwide.

Is Mr. T still living in your cabeza rent free? Must be lots of available room. I’m gay and don’t care for drag, and some of it looks like Twisted Sister (my fave band), but I’ve been to drag shows and supported that scene years before it became vogue (strike a pose) to do so, because I believe in supporting the arts and community regardless of the fact I am a gay man that personally prefers Megadeth over Mariah. And I’m proudly voting for Trump. Just because some gay men are not walking stereotypes doesn’t mean they need your bitter… Read more »

👏 I wish there was more tolerance amongst the guys whose whole identity revolves around being gay. God forbid that some gay doesn’t toe the line and dares to have a different like outside the “gay norm.” I see you, I hear you. Rock on!

Very well said! One of my gay punk friends compared the current drag scene to the ska scene of the late 90s where there were two good bands (No Doubt and The Bosstones) but every kid that played a horn in middle school band suddenly thought they were a rockstar. Now every gay guy that put on a dress once suddenly thinks they’re a talented drag queen.
