Ringworm fungus linked to gay sex appears in U.S. for 1st time

A rare sexually transmitted ringworm caused by the fungus Trichophyton mentagrophytes type VII has been reported for the first time in the United States, according to a report published in JAMA Dermatology by doctors at NYU Langone Health.

The case involves a man in his 30s from New York City who developed a red, itchy rash on his legs, groin, and buttocks after traveling to England, Greece, and California. Tests confirmed the fungal infection, marking its first identification in the U.S. Previously, 13 cases were reported in France, mainly among men who have sex with men.

The infection took four and a half months to heal, requiring treatments of fluconazole, terbinafine, and itraconazole. Dr. Avrom Caplan, an assistant professor of dermatology at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, noted that while the case should raise awareness, there is no evidence of widespread infection.

Caplan suggested that people with persistent, itchy rashes in the groin area see a doctor. He also mentioned that the infection, though likely transmitted sexually, might have been acquired from a sauna visit.

The fungus is treatable, and Caplan encouraged those with non-healing rashes to seek medical advice. Jeremy Gold from the CDC highlighted the importance of considering fungal infections in sexually transmitted disease diagnoses.

Lmao

Anyway, monkeypox. How’d that stop transmitting to kids and dogs? Where’d that go?

I wonder if this will be the same. Maybe just stop going to orgies and abstain from partying for a few weeks. Stay home, it could save your ass.

While the science of this infection says “The infection took four and a half months to heal”, this article appears to understate its severity. WTF? And, while only ‘1 case has been detected in the US’, it should not be so easily dismissed, as we did during the AIDS pandemic. And, while I’m far from being an alarmist, it is never too late to exercise discernment.

Hey WeHo Mary! Sex positive attitudes equate with MORE THAN the risk for STDs. In fact, a sex positive attitude argues for many HEALTHY, sex-positive issues INCLUDING available education to PREVENT STDs.

Yeah, right! Maybe if people used some sort of restraint and gave it a rest for a 5 minutes, we wouldn’t have to worry about all of these new STDs. It’s sad to read about someone who goes on vacation and has to hook up with multiple people. What about museums, activities, food, shopping (if you must)? There’s more to life than this!

Another gift that results from sex-positive attitudes. Time to develop some other hobbies people!
