Fred Segal closes, The Gleamery opens

Fred Segal in West Hollywood shut down this week after six years in operation at its location on the Sunset Strip.

Born in 1933, Segal founded his original namesake boutique in 1961 on Melrose Avenue, introducing a revolutionary retail concept that blended multiple shops within a single store environment. This shop-in-shop model allowed independent labels to maintain their unique branding while benefiting from being part of a larger, high-traffic location. Segal’s innovation turned casual denim into a luxury item and created a new fashion hub that attracted celebrities and style influencers. He passed away in 2021.

The property at 8500 Sunset Boulevard sold to Regal Ventures in January for $30 million.

On Thursday, The Gleamery dental studio will open a new 1,950 square-foot location in West Hollywood at 7617 Santa Monica Blvd, Suite 60. The Gleamery offers teeth cleanings and whitenings, plus other dental care and cosmetic treatments.

“The Gleamery is designed to create an environment that puts guests at ease, unlike traditional dental offices,” said CEO Evan Schlossberg. Amenities include a Brush Bar for guests to brush their teeth and admire their smiles.

Founded in 2023, The Gleamery first opened in Beaverton, Oregon.

Fred Segal’s move to Sunset and the closing of the Santa Monica store a few years ago were bad ideas. The new owner just wanted the real estate and sold it for a boatload of money, along with making some bad retail decisions. The Segal Family still owns the Trademark and brand, and I would expect a new Fred Segal to arrive somewhere in town just as Kitson makes a comeback. Welcome to the Gleamery; love the name!
