What does “fait accompli” mean? It means it’s a done deal.
The proposed development at 8850 Sunset Blvd will span .92 acres from San Vicente to Larrabee, and the entire block of Sunset Blvd. A final hearing on this project is set for tonight at the City Council Chambers. The property was originally purchased six years ago as it was reported here:
Many residents within the construction zone as well as those living just north of Sunset Blvd are up in arms over the height and scale of the project. The project has come before the city council twice before.
You can read about it here: https://wehoonline.com/2022/03/04/the-viper-room-strikes-back/
Tonite’s meeting will be the third public meeting held in front of the city council. Due to the many public comments expected this is the only major business in front of the city council this evening.
On one side is the London Hotel. The new development will sit just west of the London and change the views of many of its hotel rooms. The noise during demo and construction will certainly interfere with the peaceful enjoyment of the luxury hotel. Sensibility on Sunset, a campaign to save the Viper Room was paid for by the London hotel who hired the Afriat Consulting Group to represent their interests.
On the other side is Silvercreek Development, who has partnered with UNITE HERE Local 11 to bring this project forward. DJ Moore of Latham and Watkins represent Silvercreek. One look at the previous campaign support and donations appears to have the 3 votes that will pass this project. Erickson, Byers and Shyne will all vote yes.
Meister will try to poke holes at the project but will not get very far. Heilman will nuance the history of the project but will probably join his colleagues and vote with the developer and a final approval.
Update Footnote: Final vote project approved 3-2. Erickson, Shyne and Byers voted for the project. Meister and Heilman voted against the project’s approval.
For the record, Larry Block’s predictions were spot on correct. But truth be told, most people knew this would be the case. The “meeting” had no real deliberations, it was really just a waste of everyone’s time as it had long been decided when those campaign donations came in, purchasing Byers, Shyne and Erickson. Sadly, my prediction is this project will never see the light of day, as a developer can’t make money with the conditions imposed, like giving away free homes to out of town maids who expect to make $89,000 per year for their skill of doing “hospital… Read more »
All of Sunset Blvd is lost potential… I wish I knew it when it had any iota of intrigue and importance – now it’s just s drive though zone… WeHo’s biggest crux is Sunset Blvd…
When will Weho residents ever learn that this decade’s long process is nothing more than a dog and pony show?
It has always been this way in Weho.
Massage everyone into thinking that their views really matter, let them jump up and down, hire Seymour, and after enough time, its a done deal!
Residents walk away shaking their heads vowing to elect new types of leaders and then do nothing.
Pathetic.
I am NOT a fan of Unite Here…at all…or Erickson, Byers on Shyne. They have all done HORRIBLE things to this city. BUT I AM IN SUPPORT of this project for many reasons. This part of Sunset is in horrible, horrible condition, nasty old strip mall. Hotel revenue is good for our local city economy. That street level will be reactivated with new shops/restaurants. This is the type of project you want on a major commercial street. Those that live directly below and complain, don’t really have a leg to stand on…I mean, come on! When you move directly below… Read more »
Well said! I agree 100 per cent.
Completion Date: 2072
Or never… there are a few major projects in WeHo that have that look – you know, The Melrose Triangle, Robertson Lane, French Market, SMB/Crescent Heights, Art’s Club, Hornburg/Cock’n Bull site, etc.
