Chef Wes Ávila, known for his work at Guerrilla Tacos and Angry Egret Dinette, is opening a new Mexican steakhouse on the outskirts of West Hollywood this Friday.
MXO, which stands for “Mexican origins,” will offer steakhouse dishes inspired by the culinary traditions of Monterrey, Mexico.
Ávila first gained attention for his modern Mexican American cooking, known as Alta California cuisine, after founding Guerrilla Tacos in 2012 as a street cart before transitioning to a food truck. His work caught the eye of Chef Guillermo González, co-founder of the Paralelo Norte chef conference, where Ávila presented on the fine dining taco in Monterrey in 2014.
The restaurant, located at 826 N. La Cienega Boulevard, will feature 150 seats in a dining room wrapped around a central bar. Notable dishes include the birria beef martillo, a $275 wagyu beef shank braised and served with marrow and consomé.
MXO will be open from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, and until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Seems like the perfect place for a developer to wine and dine a council member.
A $275 beef shank. Seems reasonable.
A Tale of Two Cities
Something that I will never eat, but sounds great for the people who do.
Good luck!
I wish him the best of luck. High end special occasion dining is such a hard business to sustain in today’s world. What West Hollywood really needs is a local neighborhood dining option in the style of Basix where you can afford to pop in for a cocktail and dinner on a weeknight and not break the bank.
