Activists have WeHo cookie shop in their crosshairs

Animal-rights group The Human League is planning a protest outside Crumbl, a cookie shop at the West Hollywood Gateway shopping center, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26.

The organization — whose mission is to “get people to leave animals off their plates” — accuses Crumbl of “contributing to widespread animal cruelty” by using eggs from caged hens.

The franchise, which opened its WeHo location in May, has thus far refused to make the switch to cage-free eggs, according to the Human League.

Cage free, free range, organic, or not – can we talk about Crumbl’s bigger issue(s): false advertising (those aren’t cookies!) & the reality that their little snack cakes don’t actually taste very good?

Want a cookie worthy of your hard-earned dollars? WeHo has so many better options.

Good. This company talks a big game about using high quality ingredients. The least they can do is actually use cage-free eggs.

What are these people protesting? As of January 2024 California is cage free. Unless all their cookie dough is pre-made and comes from Utah where the corporate office is located there is nothing to protest. If their cookie dough comes from Utah then these people should go protest in Utah and leave the franchisee alone. They are most likely contractually obligated to buy their cookie dough from corporate.

Actually due to overwhelming political activism in Utah (a very courageous act considering its highly reactionary demographics) the Utah State Legislature passed a measure in 2021 that requires only cage-free methods in egg production by 2025. Approved as major egg buyers & industry leaders pushed producers to switch to cage-free eggs based on information provided by their costumers and activists❗

Numerous studies show cage-free eggs have a healthier overall nutritional profile. Benefits include less saturated fat & cholesterol, and higher levels of protein. Cage-free eggs have significantly more Vitamin A and Vitamin E; more omega 3s; higher levels of alpha tocopherol and alpha-linolenic acid; higher carotenoid levels; more lutein; a healthier omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids ratio; higher bone mineral density; and more beta carotene.

All eggs sold in California are cage-free.

YES California voters approved Proposition 12, also known as the Farm Animal Confinement Initiative that requires eggs produced in California must be cage-free. BUT only 65% of California eggs were produced from hens in cage-free housing by 2022 and, reaching 100% compliance by 2025 is still looking like it’ll miss the mark even though the law went into effect in January 2024.

The Human League?!? Not quite. These annoying animal whacktivists should be called Men Without Brains or the Pointless Sisters.

With each cookie being $5, they should be able to build in the cost of cage free eggs. I think it is something we should all be cognizant of. I always buy either pasture raised, organic or cage free (in that order). At the same time I need to hold restaurants I dine at accountable for being ethical also.

Sure, go live by your weird little rules, but leave the rest us alone to enjoy a dang cookie when we want. It’s time to get off your high horse, because you’re probably hurting its back, and as an animal activist, you certainly don’t want that, right?

The European Food Safety Authority studied over 3,000 farms in EU member states finding that Salmonella Enteritidis and other diseases are five times more likely to be found in cage systems compared to cage free systems ❗ Eggs from cage-free farms have lower levels of insecticide chemical residue, lower insect infestation levels, and lower concentrations of dioxin-like contaminants.

To start, you’re rude. I think people should buy humanely produced dairy and meat. Sorry not sorry. If they’re selling $5 cookies, they can afford the extra 50 cents per dozen eggs for cage free ones. I’m sorry but you don’t seem like a pleasant person. Best wishes and I hope you find happiness.

Cy often has a good point that gets lost in his delivery.
Wish he could engage in a more accessible manner.
