The Trevor Project, a leading suicide prevention organization for LGBTQ youth, has named Dua Lipa as its 2024 Mental Health Champion of the Year. The West Hollywood-based nonprofit highlighted Lipa’s significant contributions to mental health advocacy and her dedication to supporting the LGBTQ community.
The award is given to public figures who use their platforms to raise awareness of mental health issues impacting LGBTQ youth. Past recipients include Lil Nas X, Janelle Monáe, and Dylan Mulvaney. Lipa, a global pop icon with a devoted LGBTQ fan base, was recognized for her consistent efforts to stand against anti-LGBTQ discrimination and support young people struggling with mental health challenges.
The Trevor Project’s CEO, Jaymes Black, noted that Lipa’s role as an ally and her openness about mental health struggles make her an exemplary recipient. “She uses her influence to spotlight the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ youth, particularly the need for accessible and inclusive mental health care,” Black said.
Lipa’s public advocacy for LGBTQ rights aligns with her history of using her platform to address pressing social issues. Her influence was particularly evident during the U.S. presidential election, a time when The Trevor Project reported a dramatic surge in calls to its crisis services. Lipa helped amplify their efforts by sharing their resources with her social media audience, underscoring the urgency of mental health support for LGBTQ individuals during times of heightened stress.
In addition to her broader advocacy work, Lipa has spoken publicly about her own experiences with mental health struggles, including anxiety and self-doubt. Her candid approach and dedication to creating safe spaces for marginalized communities have solidified her status as a trusted ally to the LGBTQ community and an advocate for mental health awareness.
