Imagine an emergency unfolding before you—would you know how to act? The City of West Hollywood is empowering its community with the skills and confidence to respond effectively by offering free American Red Cross certification in CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation), First Aid, and AED (Automated External Defibrillator) use. This training, scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2025, is your chance to become a vital link in the chain of survival.

The free certification sessions will take place at the West Hollywood Park Aquatic and Recreation Center (8750 El Tovar Place, Fairfax/La Brea Room), with two time slots available: 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Limited parking can be found at the nearby West Hollywood Park Five-Story parking structure (625 N. San Vicente Boulevard).

What to Expect: This comprehensive Red Cross program covers adult and pediatric CPR, First Aid, and AED techniques, equipping you to handle a range of medical emergencies. The certification process blends convenience with hands-on learning:

  • Online Coursework: A 2.5-hour self-paced module, accessible via a link sent seven days before the in-person session. Completion is required prior to attending.
  • In-Person Training: A 1.5- to 2-hour session featuring skill reviews and testing to earn your certification.

How to Register: Spots are limited and expected to fill fast! Secure yours through the City of West Hollywood’s “ActiveNet” online portal. New to ActiveNet? Registration is quick and takes just a minute. If sessions reach capacity, join the waitlist for future trainings by emailing [email protected] or calling (323) 848-6538.

Why It Matters: Accidents and emergencies are unpredictable, but preparation isn’t. Every year, millions suffer injuries—or worse—due to delayed or inadequate aid. A bystander’s quick action can double a victim’s survival odds, bridging the gap until professional help arrives. This training doesn’t just certify you; it transforms you into a potential lifesaver.

It’s the general public who are the most likely to be at the scene of an emergency well before First Responders arrive and, time matters especially in cases of respiratory or cardiac arrest. That’s why Basic Life Support (BLS) for the general public is a very good idea. BLS certification should be offered in high school as part of their Health and Physical Education classes. West Hollywood would likely benefit greatly from offering or requiring their Security Ambassadors to have BLS, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS), or even have some certified Emergency Medical Technicians⚕ (EMTs) as Security Ambassadors.
