Influencers are typically thought of as younger peeps, particularly those in Gen Z and early Millennials. So when I got an invite to a “mingle” for the new Mid-Century Modern series, I wondered where Mitchell Squires from Hulu would find anyone that fits the definition under 50 in Palm Springs.
And when we were asked to help invite local influencers, I had to rethink what that is in today’s social media world. We gathered for a preview of the show at the Dinah Shore Palm Springs Estate to see where the opening sequence and other exterior shots were filmed.
First, the series couldn’t be more appropo for being set in our town. Like The Golden Girls before it, Mid-Century Modern throws together old friends – and a mother (the late Linda Lavin) — for a generational mix of escpades and adventures.
The first episode has the men coming together after the death of a close friend and a re-examining of their collective lives. Nathan Lane’s character is live-in Lavin’s rich son who is a retired gay man in Palm Springs. In his Leonardo DiCaprio-set mansion, he has lots of room for his gay friends to move in. And they do. 10 episodes will drop next Friday on Hulu. While none of the cast was present (as this event was planned on short notice), there was much Palm Springs “royalty” on hand.
You see, our influencers are mostly men of a certain age, like myself. So Bob Mackie was in attendance, along with Gay Men of Palm Springs’ Raymond LaFleur, KGAY’s John Taylor, KESQ’s Patrick Evans, and Nicholas Snow. Even our younger influencers like Matthew Hocutt, Scott Nevins and DJ Modgirl still don’t fit my stereotypical image of a 20-something with arm extended holding an iPhone making selfies for their adoring fans.
Nonetheless, you’ll see plenty of social media activity around the event — and the show — as it shows off Palm Springs in a lighthearted and on-the-money way. One of my favorite scenes takes place at a fictional gay resort with Coco Peru as the desk clerk. It was shot covering The Purple Room’s exterior signage of Club Trinadad. I’m sure there are many more homages to Palm Springs in the upcoming episodes. I’ll be renewing my Hulu subscription — and thinking about how I’ll be spending my “golden years” in mid-century Palm Springs.
