The developers of the new condos at 8615 West Knoll have switched up their original plans for something softer and greener.
The five-story building was initially designed in the brutalist tradition, a style characterized by exposed, unpainted concrete and simple, minimalist structures.
The updated plans, presented to the Design Review Subcommittee last week, feature a smooth stucco facade interlaced with vertical wooden siding.
The building will now have a rooftop terrace in addition to its private balconies, as well as lush landscaping in a rear yard. The edifice will contain six single-story residences, four two-story townhomes with one very-low income affordable housing unit.
Barth Partners and architect Marcello Pozzi are behind the project.
Unfortunately it is an artful decorative device and a diversion from TREES IN THE GROUND, which is what we and the planet need. Check out PM Imran Khan in Pakistan and his major tree planting around the country. He is a serious person on many levels. Follow him if you like on Instagram. Enlightening.
As those green things grow, what will they drop on the balconies below and how much sun will they block?
LOOKS EVEN WORSE!
Someone show the developers of 8850 Sunset that it’s possible to redesign your awful architectural plans to avoid offending the vast community of locals who must live around the structure.
Our city scheme has become the giant invitation and welcome mat for tourism, the residents be damned. The cavalcade of hotels on Sunset Strip embellished by digital technology, seem offensive to the residents above and below Sunset. Other hotels scattered around the city seemed the right revenue stream before the pandemic now are being rethought to be in tune post pandemic to capture office space and hi priced residential units. The city’s views about Public Safety and the Scooter Jockeys remain nil, after all we want to put out a friendly doormat for the tourists and want they to come… Read more »
Something needs to be done with the lot immediately to the west of this location. It has been vacant way too long.
Nothing will be done with that larger lot. It is owned by the people who own the aging 60’s apartment building on the lots west side.
I’ve known (casually when walking my dog) he has no plans, or PLAN TO HAVE NO PLAN OR Construction.
Pleasant guy, but never really explained why. But owners of land can choose to not build on it and he’s been here long pre city of WeHo.
Sorry, it’s a lot and will be.
Interesting and helpful to publish an overview map of the area. Although it is part of the staff reports on every project, it is rarely published in articles and should always be included. Thank you Brandon. We have to thank West Hollywood Planning Department for creating this small stab to the heart of green space and tree canopy albeit on private property exploited by development guidelines. Although one can see a few small tufts of green in the surrounding neighborhood, they will soon be snuffed as well. Alert to Westbourne Drive, enjoy your trees, birds, butterflies and occasional critters while… Read more »
While I appreciate your praise for City Architect, Ric Abramson, expecting him to change an entrenched culture at the Community Development Department is going to be a tall order. Ric does bring a balanced and environmentally aware sensibility to City Hall; we can only hope it is contagious.
On the issue of “critters” leaving …. If only. My dog passed this weekend, but the critters are squirrels which almost all dogs hate & they tease and toy with the huge number of dog owners on these blocks. My very nimby issue is HOW UGLY IT IS. This is such an expensive street (not fancy, but short supply HIGH COST) A LOVELY modern building of quality would look nice & sell out fast. Behind shake shake on the south of SMB westknoll at Huntley I think, is a high quality modern condo complex built many years ago, that is… Read more »
