The world is engaged in seeking balance with our devices and curating appropriate digital relationships, footprints, and global citizenship right now and West Hollywood Elementary is going to deliver! West Hollywood Elementary will participate in Digital Citizenship Week from October 18, 2021-October 22, 2021 and they enthusiastically invite our entire community to join in and cheer them on.

While the topic of Digital Citizenship is enormous, West Hollywood Elementary students participate in #DigCitCommit each year. Dig Cit Commit includes 5 areas of competency; Being inclusive, being informed, being engaged, being balanced, and being alert.

For Digital Citizenship Week 2021 West Hollywood Elementary will focus on helping our students think about restoring balance with technology in their lives. We will celebrate with experiences like a mobile petting zoo, Cool Critter show, learning dances with coding and human iterations, exploring loops and patterns (Ostinato), experiencing mindfulness lessons, and engaging in rich digital citizenship lessons in the classroom. While the excitement of technology entices us to engage with it, we must make sure to balance our lives with nature, music, art, and connect all things in a balanced and healthy way.

Purpose of DigCit Week

To bring awareness to all stakeholders within the school community that we are all digital citizens and we can, from a young age, begin cultivating a positive and proactive digital footprint. We focus on what students should DO online versus the DONT’S. We use the language from our partners at DigCit Commit (The DigCit Competencies) when talking to students about their digital footprint.

Just HOW…does substituting real human interaction for a fake virtual life beneficial to developing kids? This push for fake virtual life onto kids is disturbing.
Nothing, and nature backs me up, will ever replace live human social development.
Moreover, who is setting the priorities here? This government overreach can’t even produce children educated properly in English or core subjects like math, history, geography, science.
Global citizen? How about you teach them the importance of developing and aiding your own community first?

It’s quite shocking that rather than treating students like developing children, the school appears to treat them as mini-adults who have yet to learn the basic sensibilities and tools for life useful in every endeavor. Personally have distinct memories of my earliest schooling from the fourth grade. Along with standard subjects, we all operated under the school motto: SKILL, SERVICE & HONOR which infused all of our lives and activities. That has been my greatest fundamental tool for guidance in numerous pursuits….business, personal and civic. Grateful to my wise parents for proper guidance as well as Elektor… Read more »

Correction. That was first grade @ 4 years of age. Thankfully, subsequent schools endorsed the same philosophy.

Do you have children at this school? I plan to have a meeting with the Principal in thee near future to impart some of these thoughts.

Ian, I agree with you but the initial goal for this notion of digital citizenship is not to substitute human interaction for digital interaction but moreso to educate the youth about the fundamentals of being online such as Digital etiquette, digital fluency, digital rights, and responsibilities, etc. It gives the youth the ability to adapt and properly use the interweb at such a young age unlike people like us who didn’t have that resource growing up since it was developing as time went on. And having this DigCit week shows relevancy and importance to understanding such issues and topics. I… Read more »
