West Hollywood had a significant pet companion population before the pandemic and it’s gotten larger since. Everyone knows someone who’s adopted a new pet over the last year and half and you can see the increase just driving or walking down the street.
The good news is dogs and cats have been rescued and our lives have been made richer by their companionship. The bad news is without proper care our furry loved ones can contract and spread communicable diseases. Los Angeles County health officials are reporting outbreaks of canine influenza and leptospirosis in recent months. In severe cases these diseases can lead to death.
During the pandemic residents may be hesitant to get medical treatment or vaccines for their pet companions because of high costs or concern about going inside a veterinary hospital. To protect our pet companions and to protect our community, West Hollywood needs to provide regularly scheduled low cost vaccination clinics in one of its parks.
Now is the ideal time for the City to assist the community and those residents who have been impacted by the pandemic. Offering low cost vaccination clinics would help ensure our animal companions are protected, healthy and not spreading viruses or diseases.

Great idea! I also think the city should put a ban on no pet clauses in apartments.
When I was as the code manager, we had low cost vaccine clinics twice a year at Plummer park. Not sure why that needed.
Why that ended.
This is an awesome idea and should be fast tracked by the city.
Excellent article Richard. Along with what you suggest, I believe many pet owners should become more educated about the proper care and management of their dog & cat friends. So many diseases specifically transmission of worms in dogs that frequently use the public latrine aka our parkways, neighbors pretty green lawns and gardens. While many owners properly dispense with the waste, your dogs have walked in areas affected by other dogs, then track in into your home on to your bed and furniture. YUCK! We would”like” the city to make some arrangements in which the WeHo Vet Clinics could volunteer and collaboratively participate in a public clinic orchestrated by the city without too much complication.
I know so many people that have not gotten pet vax, because of high costs. This would be an amazing idea.
I’m searching for a little kitty that wants to find a loving home. My issue is getting around to find one. I miss my “Tiger” that I had for almost 20 years and is now in kitty heaven.
