State Sen. Bob Hertzberg, above left, announced Tuesday he’s jumping into already-crowded race for County Supervisor (Third District).
The Van Nuys senator will face West Hollywood Councilmember Lindsey Horvath in the June 7 primary election, as well as with State Sen. Henry Stern (D-Calabasas) and Assemblyman Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica).
Since entering the California legislature in 1996, Hertzberg has been a fierce advocate for the San Fernando Valley. The Third District was recently redrawn; it now Granada Hills and Chatsworth, a boon for the 67-year-old’s prospects.
Hertzberg’s entrance into the race follows the exit of L.A. Controller Ron Galperin, above right, who is running for the state controller seat.
The five members of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors oversee a budget of nearly $40 billion. They also supervise most county departments and programs .
I received a fundraising letter from Lindsey Horvath proclaiming her as the frontrunner in the Supervisor election. One of the reasons cited is her successful programs on homelessness.
While I agree that Horvath has been successful in bringing more homeless people to the streets of West Hollywood, I’m so disturbed that she has tricked Los Angeles voters into believing her self-serving lies.
Horvath has seduced so many people in West Hollywood with her sugary talk and blonde flowing locks. I’m so sorry to see this spread beyond our community.
Why four middle-aged white Democrat career political candidates and NOI Hispanic candidates? They are the majority in LA County. The armed robbery of the two UK young men took place in front of the Al Layali Restaurant at 980 La Cienega across from the LA Bike Shop. Both are seen in the news video and images of the LA Sheriff’s cars.
Your continued denial of this fact is not surprising, since you stated Romaine St is not West Hollywood.
The real question is, why are you splitting hairs over this? I believe, if it was in LA, the LASD could respond, and if it was in WeHo, the LAPD could respond. And I understand how jurisdiction works. Is this an argument over crime stats within the city limits?

I regret Ron Galperin opted out of a candidacy for County Supervisor. He has done a superb job as Comptroller in Los Angeles, and his credentials and experience in administering substantial budgets would have been an asset to the Board of Supervisors. Ms. Horvath is a nice, well meaning young woman, but lacks the experience to be effective as a Supervisor. Bloom is more than a bit tone deaf. In the 2020 election he was one of the few elected officials to endorse John Duran, despite the fact we paid a half a million settlement to Ian Owens, his former deputy, and there was an ongoing sexual harassment scandal involving Duran with the Gay Men’s Chorus. Bloom’s endorsement made me question if he really knew or cared about what is going on in West Hollywood.
This is an old issue and one which needs to be shelved. We are talking about the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors, a responsibility as great and powerful as many state governments. Endorsing John Duran in 2020 and the Ian Owens settlement should not be an issue or judgement reflection in the BOS race in 2022. Steve, I always respect and admire your commentary, even when I disagree on substance. This comment, however, smacks of intolerance and cancel culture. First, not every sentence that begins with John Duran needs to end with Ian Owens. Second, I think it’s unfair to judge Mr. Bloom based on one endorsement. Ian Owens is just one of many young men who’s reputation and potential was permanently damaged by Duran’s exploitative behavior. But that’s hardly the worst of it— just ask the homeless struggling addicts in the recovery rooms where JD self-aggrandizes himself as a leader, or the victims of Ed Buck. Nobody truly knows if Ian Owens was victimized, vs. being a ladder-climber. It might fall somewhere in the middle. I’ve worked in offices with several other gay men, 20 years ago. Nobody seemed to feel “victimized” by seeing pictures of shirtless men, or some commentary that is now no longer appropriate in the office. I recognize that things have changed. But I don’t think that Owens was a victim. Alan, I would not call a 2020 endorsement “ancient” but you are correct in that people should consider a range of issues when deciding to vote for any candidate. As I have said previously Hertzberg’s entry will only further divide the vote among the Valley folks and provide a path for Lindsay Horvath, who will have strong support from women, progressives and Labor. My only advise for Horvath is to remember she is running for Supervisor in a district that encompasses a large section of the West San Fernando Valley and calibrate accordingly. Horvath presents well as a fresh face among a bunch of guys who are facing term limits in Sacramento and are just looking for their next political gig.

The tragic murder was remarkable and occurred in a location on La Brea reasonably considered adjacent to Weho and of such high interest it should have received coverage. It occurred in a business resource to the interior design market place as are many in Weho. The easy access to such businesses under today’s conditions with hostile transients, homeless and mentally deranged folks roaming the streets should alert many business owners that have not considered secure entry ways.
