WeHo’s pickleball clinic a hit for all ages

A big crowd braved Saturday’s scorching temperatures to dip their toes into the trending sport known as pickleball.

More than 100 people showed up for the free clinic held by the City of West Hollywood at the Plummer Park tennis courts and hosted by former tennis pro Josh Osswald.

Mayor Lauren Meister and Councilmember Lindsey Horvath were both on hand to get a taste of pickleball, which mixes up elements of badminton, tennis and ping pong and is played with a paddle

The clinic was the brainchild of Councilmember John Erickson and Mayor Pro Tem Sepi Shyne, both new fans of the sport. While the two were under the weather and unable to attend, their work in planning the event paid off, with pickleball proving to be a popular draw for a very diverse group of WeHo residents.

While new for many of those in attendance, pickleball traces its origins back to the mid-1960s, where it began as a backyard game for kids.

Looks like people had a great time! Love conquers hate.

It started in the backyard and should stay in the backyard. Watch for WeHo to give priority to this over the real sport of tennis. So glad to have reciprocity to book Beverly Hills tennis courts. I await the hate.

Await the hate? Alan, you are giving the hate. I mean, seriously, does everything need the hate? Perhaps you were being sarcastic, and I missed it. I hope so. I don’t think much of any article can be posted on this site without some kind of vitriolic comment, or criticism. Those articles are rare.

Hey Alan, we would love to have you come play pickleball with us sometime! Hopefully you can see why the sport has grown so quickly in popularity and that there’s certainly space for it to exist alongside tennis.

Al I never took you as the “you kids get off my lawn” type but this is a little ridiculous. Skiers said the same crap about us snowboarders in your beloved Aspen. There is plenty of space to share. Come on down to Plummer for a game with Jordan and I any time!
