UNITE HERE! will protest Jay-Z’s Oscar party at Chateau Marmont

The union that helped muscle a controversial hotel worker ordinance and minimum wage hike through West Hollywood City Hall has a new target: Jay-Z.

UNITE HERE! Local 11 is set to protest the music mogul’s Oscar night party Sunday at the Chateau Marmont.

The union has been pushing a boycott of the hotel since the start of the COVID pandemic in 2020, when 250 employees were let go reportedly without insurance or severance.

The picket line will start at 8 p.m. Sunday featuring a giant balloon arch and signs of the faces of celebrities who have supported the boycott.

“Celebrities have a responsibility to lead by example. Jay-Z has the opportunity right now to do just that by listening to the stories of Chateau Marmont workers and move his event to a location that treats its workers with dignity and respect,” Kurt Petersen, co-president of Local 11, told Page Six.

Jay-Z, who will be joined by Beyonce, has yet to budge to the union’s demands.

Just another photo app for the SHEs – Shyne, Horvath, and Erickson. Or maybe Horvath will be too busy at the Elton John party trolling for campaign cash.

As for the Oscars, no Latinos should come into the city this weekend. Strike. The entire city of West Hollywood. It speaks with forke tongue.

The “facts” according to The Guardian! I am 100% pro-union, but Unite 11 has proven themselves over and over to be bully and thugs. They are divisive and counter-productive to worker rights.

West Hollywood has apparently become a city welcoming every grievance, disruption, aberrant and unlawful behavior in addition to bad actors that delight in scamming the residents accomplish their own development schemes and political goals, conveniently intertwined. There appears to be zero consciousness about ethical values and behavior while maintaining an Ethical Task Force with one prominent member an acknowledged supporter of Ed Buck. This is a depressing realization which became obvious several years ago and is endorsed on a nearly daily basis. The disturbing aspect is that WeHo actually believes it is a beacon to the world simply because they… Read more »

It is absolutely the depressing reality. This 1.9 square miles and our 38,000 unique souls are supposed to absorb every single slight that has ever occurred in human history. It’s exhausting to even attempt to shoulder that burden. That burden is made all the heavier when we are “nannied” into obligations we might otherwise take on our own, but are labeled intolerant, or worse, for daring to have a thought that does not hew to the toxic line of the ideological intolerant fringe. I don’t need Shyne, Horvath or Erickson as my nanny. My childhood nanny is still alive at… Read more »

Lovely Alan, now if we could inspire critical thinking within every segment of the community and encourage folks to find their own logical and common sense solutions without assuming victimhood we could move ahead of the curve. Victimhood is infectious, it’s own type of debilitating plague that touches everyone, ostensibly no one will be immune.

Critical thinking does not find a home in the toxic ideological intolerance of the performative left. The my-way-or-the-highway approach leaves no room for serious debate or civilized discourse. It’s why those of us in the real world of progressive politics lament the likely loss of the House and Senate in 2022, and the presidency in 2024. The West Hollywood crowd lives in an increasingly insular bubble of naivete and arrogance based on ignorance.

It is depressing but we have to figure out how to move beyond being a country of grievance; it is really easy to divide people but the challenge is how do you get people to work together for everyone’s common benefit when we foster a toxic atmosphere of distrust? Do we have to suffer like Ukraine before we become a united people again? Over there nobody is asking about your gender, your orientation or your pronouns, if you want to carry a gun then no questions asked.

Latinos should also be protesting against all Oscar parties in West Hollywood since the Movie/TV Industry is very racist. Their entertainment product is now black and white, but when it comes to Latin-American talents, the racist Hollywood policy is Latino “Jim Crow” mantener fuera.

Of course, a significant protest should occur at the One Hotel since the owner billionaire contributed money for NO gay marriage. So where is Duke Mason when you need him to do his “Beverly Hills Hotel anti-gay protest” in his hometown at the anti-gay owned One Hotel?

Gosh Shyne/Horvath/Erickson gave the union the keys to the City via the Hotel Ordinance sweetheart deal–what more do they want?

John D’Amico voted for the same ordinance.

And Lauren Mesiter said she supported 90% of the proposal and conceded this was an issue of the City supporting economic justice for the workers who help keep our City coffers flush.

Steve, thanks for reminding me. And if I’m not mistaken, all five of the Councilmembers voted for the cost of living wage increase.

Right; there may have been some disagreements about days off but not the raise in WeHo min. wage.

I know — weird right?!? Especially since @UNITEDHERE11 launched negative campaign ads against him in the last election.

Sad how much influence the union yields in our small town — but the mother’s milk of politics is money and influence & Shyne/Horvath/Erickson are sure lapping up the bucks from Unite Here.

It was John D’Amico who made the motion to raise the minimum wage to $17.60, which was higher than what Unite Here had proposed. So obviously he cared deeply about the issue.

While they’re at it, maybe they can make some signs denouncing Jay-Z’s homophobic lyrics? For this reason, I’m always confused about the Beyoncé obsession in our community.
