Uber Eats unrolled a pilot program this week that uses robots to deliver select restaurant orders in West Hollywood.
Users who are WeHo residents can opt in to the have their deliveries brought to them by a robot or autonomous car with Level 4 autonomy.
When it arrives, you’ll get a notification containing a code. You use the code to unlock the robot or car, and then scoop up your items. West Hollywood is the first city in a planned nationwide rollout of the technology.
“Integrating autonomous, electric delivery options onto our platform from Motional and Serve Robotics is just the beginning of how we will harness this promising technology,” said Noah Zych, global GM for Uber’s autonomous mobility and delivery business, in a statement.
No word on which restaurants or how many cars/robots yet.
These unnecessary robots are dehumanizing. Just because something appears to be a technological marvel of sorts does not mean we need it. Folks can act more responsibly in their capitalistic ventures.

I would like to see a raise of hands, for the robot haters, who have ever used an automated checkout line at Whole Foods, Pavilions, etc.. I doubt that I will get a single hand raised.
I am not a fan of a job-killing machines. This is America, and this is capitalism. So this is what’s going to happen.
But I’m also not a fan of hypocrisy.
When one of these gets mugged (or crushed), and assuming it can navigate through the overcrowded weekend bars on the sidewalks, past scooter riders and over sleeping (or hungry) homeless, and finally can read the walk signs and arrows on San Vincente/Santa Monica, will they call the sheriff or one of Nika’s mental health specialists? I hope this is a joke.
Pretty sure the Public Facilities Commission and the Public Safety Commission recommended against robot delivery on our busy sidewalks and yet here they are.
And this is what happens when you increase the minimum wage for entry level non-intelligent minded jobs. Companies do what they need to do, figure out a go around to eliminate the inflated expenses. Fast food ordering kiosks, self checkouts and now this, if only robots could be built to eliminate hotel housekeepers.
Soon the Nazis in Florida will be using robots to hand out flyers! The humanity!!!

We increased the minimum wage to the highest in the nation, only to lose more minimum wage jobs to technology? I order directly from the restaurants and walk to pick up my orders. I refuse to engage the corporate greed of the delivery “services” who suck money away from small businesses, minimum wage employees, and customers all at the same time.

I agree with basically everything you said here. Definitely order directly and pickup if you can.
BUT, I don’t think any of the delivery workers (Grubhub, Ubereats, Doordash etc) are “minimum wage” in the technical sense. And they get little to no employee benefits because California voters *stupidly* passed Prop 22 back in 2020.
I’m still mad/disappointed about Prop 22 obviously.
This is why Universal Basic Income is coming as soon as possible, robotic elimination of jobs wider and wider. It’s taken long enough but the future may finally be here! Now where’s my flying autopiloted car….
