DEAR WEHO: Parking fees are designed to screw us over

I have a neighbor moving out of town today. She and her new husband rented one of those cheap uHauls to do the move themselves and parked it in a legal spot in front of our building (one of the few that is in an un-permitted block.)

They received not one, but two parking tickets because apparently they needed to get an “encroachment permit. It does seem like a “Welcome to WeHo, screw you” to ticket (twice!) a vehicle that is in a legal, non permit area parking space without any notice. It isn’t a 30 foot tractor-trailer or a crane it’s a van front $19 a day rental. Where are they supposed to park, Mars?

I know that there are moving permits available and people do get them here. But nowhere does it state that this is a requirement from the city to move in.

It seems usurious that this resident will have to pay over $150 for parking in a legal spot in front of her own building, especially since I have grown a long beard waiting for parking enforcement to show up when someone was actually blocking our driveway.

Please, take away parking from the street to give it to restaurants so they can effectively double their seating capacity at taxpayer expense, but screw over the residents who want to get a new sofa from IKEA that won’t fit in the family Camry.

Seriously West Hollywood?

Parking enforcement is the only thing this gov does well. They just circle around all day harassing residents.

Whilst I agree with you for the most part (as there needs to be something in place or commercial trucks would be parked everywhere and parking is already at a premium in most neighborhoods), this page of the city website below addresses it under “Moving Parking Permit (Parking Encroachment)” BUT how would anyone even know this is an issue in the first place???

Agreed. A simple addition to those long-winded signs, at the bottom, say something like: “Moving? Get the right permit. Dial 123.”

Since you knew about the required permit, you should have told them what to do.

Nowhere does anything read that an encroachment permit or moving pass is compulsory to park a van with legal, up-to-date license plates on a city street that is not a permit area. It was a van-front truck you rent for $19 a day so an encroachment permit (used for construction vehicles) should not apply and a moving permit is sold to us as for reserving the parking spaces. There was no reason to “warn” someone that the city considers this illegal parking since no other city I know of does.

How about the SCAM Weho Parking uses to steal money from people with legal handicap plaques who accidentally park on unmarked “hatch” lines of a handicap space”. The penalty fee is MORE than violators parking in a handicap space!!!

Does this not SCREM SCAM!
