What the candidates said at the Kol Ami forum

A round-up of notable quotes from the City Council candidates who participated in the Kol Ami Candidate Forum. They were quizzed on general issues of public safety as well as how they would protect WeHo’s Jewish population and their thoughts on Israel.

“As far as protecting the Jewish community, I think the number one issue and one of the things that I learned by attending the the summit that was held here was that education is key. I learned how anti-Semitism manifests itself. It’s not just in the ways that I assumed. And so I would prefer to educate the community more.”

“I think it was a very naive decision. What I would do is restore funding for the sheriff’s. I would make sure that all new businesses have security systems. I would also make sure that we have a better system for communicating when crimes occur, not only through Block by Block but by through all the private security as well.”

“I would appreciate when you talk about council to say council majority, because actually I voted against cutting sheriff’s deputies. When Councilmember Horvath proposed cutting five deputies, I said I would not vote for a budget that cut any deputies. I believe we need more deputies. We need them on the streets, walking the streets, and on bicycle so that they are part of the community.”

“I know the UNITE HERE candidates, part of their platform is defunding the sheriff, that’s all fine and dandy. But be honest with the public about what you plan on doing. My plan is to restore funding to pre-COVID levels and beyond adding bike, patrols adding foot patrols, and doing what is necessary. I also think that we need to make sure that the Sheriff is really keeping an eye out on our synagogues and our schools, as well as our parks, particularly with all the hate crimes and anti-Semitism we’ve been seeing as of late.

“My neighbors, who have lived there since the 50s and 60s have told me for the first time, they’re scared to leave their houses at night. I don’t think that’s right. And I don’t think the answer is to put public kiosks in the front of the Pavilions and say that’s enough, deal with it. I do however, agree that it’s a false choice that we need to have one or the other, we need to provide and restore funding for the public sheriff’s and for the sheriff’s department. And we also need to provide funding for Block by Block mental health, services, social social services, clinical health services, because there are difficult different situations and difficult circumstances.”

I did not or do not agree with cutting funding, for the sheriff’s department in West Hollywood. My father, is a former police officer. So, I understand what’s required to make sure that our police officers and people in uniform. Have the resources that they need to keep us safe. I want if I’m on city council, I’m gonna restore that funding.

“Anti-Semitism is the oldest hatred. And it’s changed forms over time. They hated us for our religion. Then they hated us and now they hate us for our state. Jews are blamed for all sorts of issues in society. And today anti-Zionism is the newest form of anti-Semitism. So I as a council member will be vigilant and I will call it out. We’ll not give a platform like the anti-Israel propaganda film that was screened in West Hollywood on the taxpayers’ dime. I will not vote to support that kind of use of taxpayer funds if I’m elected.”

“AB 2844, which was signed into law in 2016, is a measure that prevents companies that boycott or discriminate against any sovereign state including Israel from doing business with the state. And again, just to remind you BDS stands for boycott divestment and sanctions. These are companies people or, or organizations that have positions to take that stance against Israel. Yeah. As much as you know on paper these tactics seem like, you know, legitimate and nonviolent and that was something I understood at one point in time. I now understand and see the very ways that BDS furthers anti-Semitism in really dangerous ways and harmful ways to our community and tears us apart. So, I support the city of West Hollywood’s leadership on these issues.”

“People defending Hamas, people defending the PLO, and attacking Israel — those attacks are coming from the left, not the political, right? So, I think it’s important that we stay right in the center and defend our Jewish community. West Hollywood is 40% LGBT, That’s true. It’s also 40% Jewish.”

Whatever their religious beliefs, Oliver and Buyers along with Horvath are on the #CnxWhiteWoke Enemy List! Of course they could all claim to be a persons of color like Shyne?

When folks drag religion into the conversation regardless of which set of beliefs they ascribe to, they all want us to know that they have been specially anointed by God to be the truest and most perfect beings and the chosen people, literally on God’s private line and in his ear. They can regale thousands of years of history to confirm their beliefs. The one thing they never realize is that actions as humans speak louder than words. Some walk softly and others seem to be perpetually aggrieved.

Ok, let us NOT make the same mistake like the last election & get Bamboozled! The Democratic Socialist Party endorsed Sepi Shyne last time and is now endorsing Zekiah Wright & Chelsea Byers for City Council along with Horvath for Supervisor in this coming election!
Voters Beware & do the homework before you vote!!!!!

If elected, the BOW Buyers, Oliver -Wright will join Shyne – Erickson. WeHo will be kaput. The Los Angeles Times is nothing but Dr Schlong’s opinion. And his daughter. All those people working there if Schlong decided to drop the Times would be unemployable. The Times has no news. The times died when the Chandler family sold it. It’s now nothing but a boring dreary totally out of date legacy newspaper like the New York Times. It’s just opinion pieces. It’s located in El Segundo. Have you ever been to Elsa Segundo?

The candidates all try to say things that sound good when they’re in these public forums. I say, “follow the money!”
Who is contributing to their campaigns? Developers? Unite Here local 11?
Organizations like the two above don’t give money just to be nice or because they really like the candidate. They give money because they have an agenda which they want the candidate to follow if they are elected!

Time to review the campaign contributions listed on weho.org under City Clerk. It will take a bit of patience but will be well worth connecting the dots.

If I were to determine my vote based on the writing skills of these candidates I would send some of them back to eighth grade.

I believe anti-semitism, for all Semites, will be here for a very long time. I am 65 old jew-I have had employees that never met or understood a Jew or Muslim. The education of history and prejudice gets worse and worse. I read great articles about the subject and Ken Burns,”U.S. and the Holocaust drives the thoughts home. Who can we blame? Why do we assign blame to certain groups? Why are racists here forever? People always look to the smallest or weakest or newest groups to assign blame. Will this change? Councils thoughts on ISRAEL means little to me,… Read more »

I’d like to point out to Mr. Oliver that “not on the taxpayers dime” is the same stance used to remove LGBTQ literature from public schools, libraries and universities. As well as discontinue Pride celebrations and BLM programs. Censorship works both ways. The council should have no hand in censorship period.
As for Wright, huh?

How would you feel about literature in schools that was anti LGBTQ+, sounds like you wouldn’t oppose this….freedom of speech? What about council to approve screening of an anti LGBTQ+ film, would you expect them to stay out of this as well. It was a complete embarrassment to vote for this!

Holding a nation’s government to international human rights law is not antisemitic.

An elderly friend who was somewhat of an investor in Technion, the MIT of Israel frequently do fundraisers in LA. At one event three students were present and I inquired where else do they fundraise. The answer, “only the US because other countries perceive us as occupiers”.

Agree to disagree. Everyone wants to see meaningful protections for our beloved Jewish community in WeHo. Pledging allegiance to Israel has nothing to do with that.

Where Are the Evolved Adults?
Where Are the Evolved Adults?

These candidates should be focused on the core objectives and values of West Hollywood as it was formed. Fringe elements and pet projects do not belong in the matrix of city responsibilities as they are better termed personal interests and/or hobbies and they have no place on an agenda of which they feel obligated to subject the residents to endless diatribes.

Many of the candidates show their lack of education and evolution as whole functioning adults.

I watched this entire candidate forum and came away with, “this truly weeded out the amateurs!” Candidates that have a long history of living here, working here, and true experience to improve this city for the residents was so apparent compared to the group with zero experience that has a pie in the sky, utopia version of what they think is best to change our city into a woke, alphabet soup to fit the latest version of the socialists trying to gain power!

I think Wright needs to clarify their statement about educating the community more. They attended a summit and that is great. Government is not in the business of educating adults who should already have been inculcated with functioning brains to seek out information and evolve on their own. The last thing we need is another pontificating buffoon moralizing from the council dais. We need candidates who will focus on the nuts and bolts of sound municipal governance. If the majority of the current council could focus on why they were elected, they could get the people’s business done in about… Read more »

Zekiah Wright does not identify with “he” or “she.” The pronouns Zekiah chooses are “they” and “them.”

That is nice but you are born with a vagina or a penis and that is your biological identification. It is not a multiple choice question.

It may not be confusing to you, but it is confusing to me. When I hear the pronouns “ they” and “them,” I think plural. But Wright is using it to describe only one person. So that is confusing to me. If that makes you smarter than me, OK. So be it.
