After a five-year absence, Edinburgh police officer John Rebus, the protagonist of 19 previous Ian Rankin crime whodunits, is back in “Standing In Another Man’s Grave.”

Rankin resurrects his cantankerous cop, who bowed out in 2007’s “Exit Music,” and pits him against his latest main character, Malcolm Fox, of Edinburgh’s internal affairs police office.

The two detectives look into a 15-year-old girl’s disappearance, as she was last seen hitchhiking along a scenic highway in rural Scotland. Soon, the detectives learn there may be other victims, stretching back a decade.

Rankin signs and discusses his book at Book Soup at 7 p.m.
