JAMES DUKE MASON: Why Adam Schiff should be our next senator

In California we have a wealth of outstanding up and comers in state politics, and two of the most prominent ones just jumped into the race for the United States Senate. Incumbent Senator Dianne Feinstein has not yet officially announced whether she will seek re-election, though she is widely expected not to run.

The two major candidates to succeed her so far both hail from the halls of the U.S. House of Representatives, and both have made a major mark in their own distinctive ways. Katie Porter, a Congresswoman from Orange County, has made her oversight of the financial industry and her fight against the excesses of Wall Street the focus of her 4 year tenure in the House.

Adam Schiff, on the other hand, has had a number of major priorities during his 22 years in the House; he was first elected to represent his congressional district in 2000. Before that he served as a member of the California State Assembly, and was also a federal prosecutor. His 3 decades of government service is a big reason why I endorse him to serve as California’s next Senator, because Schiff has proven that he knows how the system works and how to effectively navigate it to the benefit his constituents.

Not only does he have plenty of experience and wisdom, but he has successfully made progress on many of the big issues that matter to the American people. While I admire Rep. Porter for her commitment to economic fairness for middle class Americans, that is only one area that needs to be focused on by our next Senator.

Schiff has been a leader on a broad array of issues, ranging from protecting our democracy against Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and other right-wing extremists during both of the Trump impeachment hearings, but also on issues like gun control, LGBTQ+ rights, women’s reproductive freedom and the environment which are big priorities for the largely progressive, Democratic electorate of California.

As a resident of Schiff’s House district for the last 12 years and therefore a constituent of the Congressman’s (have proudly voted for him in every single election), I have especially appreciated his sincere focus and attention to the matters that are of specific relevance and  importance to the residents of his community.

For instance, an issue that sadly doesn’t get anywhere near as much attention from our leaders in Washington as it should- the Armenian genocide and the continuing impact It has on Armenia, it’s citizens and it’s descendants- is an issue that Schiff has targeted and spoken out about loudly in order to make sure that our district’s large Armenian population is represented fairly and adequately.

Katie Porter has been a fine public servant many levels, and I’m sure there will be other very commendable, worthy candidates that enter the race in the weeks and months to come. But there is only one candidate for Senate who is a proven, resilient, battle tested fighter who we can count on 100% to deliver for us, and that’s Adam Schiff. In a time when so much of politics has one big messy spectacle, Schiff is a common sense, solutions oriented legislator who delivers tangible results. That’s exactly what we need in the Senate at this time of great challenge in America.

He should be in prison, not in the Senate.

James, we’ve hung out. A few times. Not sure if you remember me. Regardless, I completely concur, and appreciate this write-up. It is very well-written. And I totally agree. McCarthy (that prick) neutered him, by taking away his committee assignments, and his next, best move, is to go to the Senate. It will happen. Feinstein, as much as I love her, she’s done. Everyone thinks she has dementia. I am proud to live in the district that has been represented by Adam Schiff, and for the many things he’s done. He is not perfect, but who is?

Rep. Adam Schiff is a proven fighter for democracy, he’s got my vote. His biggest critics supported an insurrection, for God’s sake

From the guy who brought you Rick Caruso’s failed campaign comes another endorsement of a corporate suit. Who cares about Putin? People cannot afford to live, driving is killing us. Truly one of the dumbest people in WeHo.

What has been said about Schiff that is factually incorrect?

Where do you get your news? Let’s hear your well-informed defense of him.

Mike G: Bromides and platitudes is not an argument response. I am still waiting for Schiff’s evidence of Trump being a Russian asset/collaborator. After all, he’s got proof right!? AND, he is one of several representatives that voted to kickoff republicans from committee assignments. And when it happened to him he cried like a petulant child. Goose-gander. If you are a snowflake then remain outside in the cold.

Ohhhh gawwwwd! The man is completely devoid of decency and honesty. He is a shameless and prolific liar and everybody knows it. For some people that’s okay if that’s what it takes to “protect democracy”, as you call it. Apparently you define democracy as you getting what you want, no matter that most voters want something else. How about we elect someone with integrity who has the skills to “protect democracy”, or your version of it, without resorting to Schiff-style fascism. When his lies have been exposed, and they have, he and his party lose credibility and then pay the… Read more »

Well said. Why does CNN keep putting Schiff in front of a microphone when they know he is not telling the truth? Reason: because they don’t respect their viewers and think they are too stupid to do some research on his lies. They have a narrative and they will sell it no matter how wrong or how much they have to lie. And Schiff thinks the same way about voters. He thinks he is so much smarter than us.

Let’s just hope Duke Mason isn’t going to run for City Council again. His bumbling stupidity is painful to witness.

Dear Mr. Mason, And the public should take your word for this because…………?

Rep Schiff has experience that cuts both ways but has a visible absence of any type of respect, integrity and/or diplomacy towards Sen. Feinstein. This is a quality we should all aspire towards to improve our collective future.
