Assemblymember Rick Chavez Zbur (D-West Hollywood/Santa Monica) announced this week that he has named Abbe Land as his Woman of the Year in Assembly District 51. Land is a former Mayor of West Hollywood and CEO/Executive Director for several preeminent organizations, and tirelessly advocates for the most vulnerable in our community.
She currently serves as the Chief Strategist – Special Projects for the Los Angeles County Department of Human Resources. Prior to this role, she served as the Executive Director of the Los Angeles County Women and Girls Initiative (WGI). The WGI was created to help improve the lives of women and girls through changes in policy, program development and strategic partnerships.
Land has over 35 years of experience of work with LA County, having served as a leader within the non‐profit and civic government worlds. Land is the former Executive Director and CEO of The Trevor Project, a nationally recognized nonprofit providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBTQ+ youth. Prior to joining Trevor, Land served as Co-CEO of The Saban Community Clinic, in Los Angeles, a organization dedicated to providing healthcare to the underserved.
In addition, she served as an elected Councilmember of the City of West Hollywood from 1986-97 and from 2003-15, serving as mayor five times. Land is known for her support and leadership on women’s issues, reproductive health care, LGBTQ+ rights, affordable housing, healthcare access and civil liberties. Through her political advocacy, Land was instrumental in the development of the City’s Women’s and Disability Advisory Boards, domestic violence prevention program for same-sex couples, gender neutral bathroom ordinance, green building ordinance and landmark gun control legislation.
“No one deserves this honor more than Abbe Land,” said Zbur. “She is a tireless advocate for our most cherished values of fairness, decency and social justice for all human beings and a longtime friend. Over three decades, Abbe’s work has improved the lives of our most vulnerable. I am proud to recognize her lifetime of contributions to West Hollywood, California and our nation.”
Land currently serves on the Planned Parenthood of Los Angeles Board of Directors; Creative Acts Advisory Board; Women Against Gun Violence Advisory Board; the L.A. County Department of Public Health’s Women’s Health Policy Council and MAZON’s Public Policy Committee. In addition, she is involved with a number of civic and political organizations including ROAR Resistance a group she co-founded in 2016.
This is a blatant example of transphobia. This honor should go to a trans woman, period. Trans women are responsible for securing the rights and freedom of all cis women. Without trans women, cis women would not have the right to vote. Come on, guys. Get real.
Abbe Land is a true public servant and deserves this honor without reservation! Congrats!
Abbe Land was engaged in her deceptive self fulfilling prophesy all the while she retained a seat on City Council. Her attempt at a seat in the Assembly went on the rocks while she was trounced by Mike Feuer. Her legacy is two groomed individuals Lindsey Horvath and John Erickson, gender studies twins.
Well said. The empress has no clothes
Last year? This year? Predicted for next year?
Does she get a tiara or a crown?
Love the woman, hate her policies.
She assured people that anti-Jewish activist Chelsea Byers wasn’t an anti-semite. Man was she wrong about that!!!
Grrrrrrrrrr. Don’t get me started
We love you Abbe , you are the best….a weho treasure.
Congratulations Abbe!! You are an amazing woman and so deserving of this honor.
Add my vote for this honor. Instead of just sitting on her rear and complaining about conditions in the city, she got up and did something bout therm. Not always right perhaps, who is – but she worked to maintain our little burg. Credit where credit is due…
She’s had a lot of “leadership” jobs where she hasn’t stayed very long. Lots of jumping around. Why is that?
I recall being told back then that Land’s job at Trevor Project was to raise funds & she was dismissed for underperforming & the circumstances of her next job were of a very similar scenario. I think her only “talent” is impersonating an educated, capable “leader” & social climbing
She’s a boss lady, so they say, But her actions are far from okay. She exploits her staff, and represses the rest, Yet she’s still rewarded, that’s what’s best. A hypocrite, that’s what she is, Her morals are low, her values amiss. She’s a master of deceit, a pro at the game, But her true colors will soon be plain. It’s a shame that she’s still in power, Despite her actions, hour by hour. The government rewards her, it’s true, But what about the rest of us, too? It’s time for a change, that’s for sure, We need leaders who… Read more »
Very good. I couldn’t agree more. Phony is what phony does.
