Genevieve Morrill, President and CEO of the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, announced that Jason Iloulian will be the first recipient of the Edward Levin Award at this year’s State of the City event.
The annual State of the City event will take place on June 26th at the 1 Hotel. The yearly event is one of two annual fundraisers held by the Chamber.
Morrill showered words of praise on Iloulian and Faring Capital: “We are thrilled to acknowledge Jason Iloulian and Faring at the State of the City with the first Ed Levin Award, honoring excellence in design. Jason’s vision and the work Faring is developing in West Hollywood are, bar none, the most exemplary design coming out of the ground in this past decade. The added significance of Faring’s focus on preserving any historic relevance pays tribute to Ed Levin and his contributions in service on the City’s Historic Preservation Commission.”
Ed Levin served on the Historic Preservation Commission for many years and passed away suddenly in November 2022.
“Our team at Faring is deeply honored to receive the inaugural Ed Levin Design Excellence Award,” Iloulian said. “This prize is a fitting tribute to Ed – a pillar of our Creative City and someone who always demanded the best for West Hollywood. We will make sure to reflect Ed’s remarkable legacy in each of our future projects,” Iloulian added.
Faring Capital is one of the largest developers in and around West Hollywood. Some of Faring’s projects include Robertson Lane/The Factory, the French Market Place redevelopment, and the former Pumpkin Patch on Doheny. In 2017, Faring received the West Hollywood Corporate Innovation Award.

While the potential recipient of this award has designed some meaningful projects, yet to be built, the award is named for an individual that although seated on the Historic Preservation Commission, was no friend of Historic Preservation. His place on the commission appeared to have been a lucrative calling card for him nonetheless. Keep your true friends close and your enemy closer, provided you can distinguish between the two.
Iloulian’s comment that “This prize is a fitting tribute to Ed…” now makes sense given your comments about Ed Levin’s relationship to Historic Preservation. This prize clearly recognizes the opposite of preservation.
Can you describe Ed Levin’s remarkable legacy?
Since the city freely allows Illoulian to buy his way on the real estate front, why stop when it comes to buying an “award?”
Sadly, it seems par for the course.
So we are giving out awards to projects that aren’t even completed yet? Or did I miss something? This is like giving an Academy award to a film that is released in nine months, and is still in production. If they are going to hand out this kind of award, maybe they should make sure that the project is completed first? Or am I crazy?
The award is for “excellence in design.”
And they are, for the most part, excellent.
When are we going to see movement on Robertson Lane and the French Market?
In medieval times, serfs and peasants worked tirelessly for their noble families and landlords, with no hope of ever experiencing a better life. Flash forward to the modern era, and it seems like not much has changed.
A single family holds a disproportionate amount of power and influence over local politics, wining & dining the political prostitutes seduced by their class and charm.
Meanwhile, the regular people are left clueless and powerless, ruled over by an insider class that they cannot even comprehend. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Well deserved, the buildings are mostly gorgeous.
Check them out:
Faring.
He is getting an award for creating the 2 largest current unbuilt eyesores in WeHo, plus 1 apartment building which rents for $15000 per month.
Maybe the chamber can give the award to Arman Gabaee (Melrose Triangle debacle) when he get out of jail for bridling public officials.
Ed Levin is probably rolling over in his grave.
