Lindsey Horvath is still flying the flag for UNITE HERE in her new role on the Board of Supervisors, where the former West Hollywood councilmember is helping the powerful union take its agenda and ambitions countywide.
At the supervisors’ meeting this week, Horvath proudly introduced another union-backed ordinance affecting all hospitality and hotel workers in unincorporated areas of L.A. County, like Marina Del Rey. UNITE HERE Local 11 is the labor union that controls 32,000 such workers in Southern California. Its leaders were aiming for the “largest industry strike in modern history” when they orchestrated the targeted workforce disruptions seen at local hotels such as the Andaz and 1 Hotel all summer long.
Horvath’s law, pitched as prevention for housekeepers against sexual assault, requires personal security tools and a reasonable period for reporting criminal or threatening acts to the appropriate authorities, plus higher pay for intense labor, voluntary overtime, and job continuity when hotels undergo a change in ownership or management.
In 2021, the former councilmember led the charge in raising the minimum wage in West Hollywood despite a chorus of pleas from small business owners. A year later, she secured her powerful new position with invaluable help from the deep pockets and political muscle of UNITE HERE and other special-interest groups.
At the same meeting this week, Horvath’s colleague Supervisor Janice Hahn got the ball rolling on a $25/hour minimum wage mandate for hotel workers as well as amusement park employees.
Critics say the cost of the wage hikes ends up being borne by the consumer, further fueling inflation.
22% of all the money West Hollywood brings in annually comes from hotels, via the Transient Occupancy Tax.
Lindsey Horvath, a textbook case as to how extremely driven but less than competent individuals become entrenched in local, city and state governments. The grift and lies become woven into the perception of accomplishment. We are the poorer for it and must eliminate it at the first signs of doubt.
I think the headline would more accurately read: “Unite Here Tightens its Grip on Lindsey Horvath”. She displays her lack of independence on a daily basis. The term indentured servant comes to mind.
Horvath has done the most damage to our city in its history (Shyne a close second). I thought once she failed up, we wouldn’t see her face on our local city news anymore. Ugh.
One of the most awful and deceitful public servants I have ever come across. The damage she has done to Weho will be felt for many years to come.
WeHo residents: For the CORPORATIONS.
Corporate dominance good; worker strength bad.
Up with capitalism.
I’m sorry, this is atrocious. Hotel workers and amusement park workers making more than teachers. Our society is certainly upside dumb (sic).
They wouldn’t be making more than teachers.
LAUSD has teachers starting at 69K
Actually teacher salaries range between $31,000 and $100,000 based on credentials and position and if they provide additional coverage, ie: administrator, coach, etc.
This is not true. The teacher’s union went on strike earlier this year and they have a new contract.
I’m not allowed to add links here, but just google their contract terms. You seriously think teachers in LAUSD are making 31k?! Maybe in 1995 lol
Lindsey Horvath is the single worst thing to ever happen in the City of West Hollywood, and that includes almost 40 years of John Heilman and company running the show. Yes, he’s the guy who originally appointed Lindsey Horvath when Sal Guariello died. You uninformed voters are to blame, as usual. And look, you keep reelecting the same fools. Then you wonder why things are so bad and getting worse.
yep, WeHo Queen….the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over & over again & expecting a different result! The voters have displayed insanity for years now & I suspect for years to come because they just don’t learn to “vet” these fools enough!
John Heilman has always been against term limits, now they are imposed. I actually agree with him. If the people are dumb enough to keep voting for these fools, the voters deserve what they get. An unaffordable city, getting overrun with crime, homelessless, filth, lack of parking, lack of greenspace, and freeloaders galore. The sad part is even knowing all of this, which is undeniable, they will still vote for the same people and the same ilk.
Lindsey Horvath is the reflection of the abominable people that hatched and tutored her. Thanks but no thanks to Abbe Land and John Heilman.
What else can you expect from this middle-aged woman who backed George Bush. America’s greatest war criminal. She is the streetwalker for paper play. West Hollywood’s own little spinster Barbie doll that we gave the county to make it worse than it was.
I think that the $25/hour wage for hotel workers applies to hotels of a certain size/number of rooms.
Yes, the LA Times reported this applies for hotels with sixty or more rooms in unincorporated areas of LA County. My question would be do any hotels even fall under this new provision? More performative politics.
Hello Steve: The motion as offered by Supervisor Hahn while misguided, out-of-touch with reality and being pushed by Unite Here Local 11 will unfortunately include any and all hotels over 60 rooms. Think Marina Del Rey and other small pockets of the county not within an incorporated area.. The big disaster will be to the hotels located in Stevenson Ranch, unincorporated Valencia, Castaic and all the way up to Lebec. Magic Mountain and Hurricane Harbor are also located within unincorporated Valencia. The real problem are the hotels in Valencia who compete with hotels literally across the freeway. Those hotels are… Read more »
The very nature of these high minimum wages is so incredibly condescending to the people receiving them. The message to them is, we know you are too stupid to do more than menial labor and because some of you have six kids we are going to keep you right where you are and dependent on us. There are trade schools all over LA county where they could learn a marketable skill but there is no reason to do that if they are living well enough making beds, cleaning toilets and vacuuming hallways. Horvath will continue to destroy our local economy… Read more »
Horvath will continue to hurt people wherever she goes. If I hear her say it, I know that it’s not true.
It sounds like Horvath, Sepi et. al. are collecting significant contributions from the labor unions. Just a guess, this being more a political era than a cooperative one.
