Jewish Family Service LA (JFSLA) is urgently seeking volunteers for its Senior Nutrition Program to deliver meals to homebound seniors in Culver City. JFSLA is a social services network that supports people in Los Angeles through various life challenges. Among its services, the Senior Nutrition Program stands out by offering free meals to seniors and individuals with disabilities. Last year alone, the program delivered nearly 225,000 meals to over 2,400 clients.
According to Stratton Harrison, the Congregate Meal Site Supervisor, the program requires immediate assistance to continue serving its homebound clients. These individuals, unable to leave their homes due to age or disability, rely on the program for their nutritional needs. “Our clients depend on our program for food as some of them can’t prepare meals on their own, and we depend on our volunteers,” Harrison stated.
The program currently serves 25 homebound clients in Culver City each week. Volunteers with eligible driver’s licenses are needed to pick up meals from the Culver City Senior Center at 4095 Overland Avenue. They will then deliver these meals to up to five nearby clients. The program organizes the most efficient delivery routes to minimize driving distance for volunteers. Those who volunteer need to have some free storage space in their vehicles, as they will be delivering a week’s worth of lunches, including fruits and vegetables, to each client. Volunteers are particularly needed on Mondays and Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and noon.
In addition to its home delivery service, the Culver City Senior Center also serves as JFSLA’s largest meal site. Nearly 100 meals are served daily at the center. As the program transitions to a restaurant-style service, additional volunteers will be needed to help serve meals on site.
Those interested in volunteering can contact Joyce Williams, JFSLA’s Director of Volunteers and Training, via email at jmwilliams@jfsla.org or by phone at 323-556-2828.
