In a significant milestone for Los Angeles’ iconic music scene, the ROXY Theatre celebrates its 50th anniversary with a series of events that pay homage to its rich history and the luminaries that graced its stage over the decades. Nestled in the heart of West Hollywood, a place that pulsates with a rich musical heritage, the ROXY has been a beacon of live music and entertainment since its inception in 1973.

On September 12, 2023, the West Hollywood Library will unveil “The ROXY: 50 and Still Rockin'” exhibit, taking visitors on a journey through the five decades of the nightclub’s storied history. The exhibit is curated by Jasen Emmons of the Grammy Museum and organized in partnership with the ROXY Theatre. This deep dive into the annals of music history is open to the public free of charge and will be on display until May 2024, accessible during the regular operating hours of the library.

The exhibition tells the tale of how two friends, Lou Adler, a record label owner and cultural tastemaker, and Elmer Valentine, owner of the nearby Whisky a Go Go, decided that the Los Angeles region needed a new rock club. They envisioned a 1940s-era nightclub with a timeless name that catered to musicians with a modern sound system and clear sightlines. This vision brought to life the ROXY Theatre on the Sunset Strip, a venue that has hosted memorable performances by artists ranging from Bob Marley to Bruce Springsteen, Prince to Linda Ronstadt, and many more.

Adding to the grandeur of the day is a talk as part of the West Hollywood Artists and Icons series. Lou Adler and Nic Adler will be engaging in a conversation that takes place in the West Hollywood City Council Chambers/Public Meeting Room at 7:00 PM, coinciding with the debut of the photographic exhibit about the Roxy’s 50th anniversary at the adjacent West Hollywood Library. The discourse promises to be rich and enlightening, offering glimpses into the vibrant history and the journey of the iconic venue through the words of the people who witnessed its growth firsthand. Following the talk, attendees are invited to a reception for the exhibit at the West Hollywood Library from 8:00 PM to 10:00 PM.

As the clock strikes 6:30 PM, the doors will swing open to welcome enthusiasts, inviting them to be a part of a historic evening. The event will unfold as a series of insightful sessions, beginning with the main event at 7:00 PM and transitioning into a Q&A segment at 7:45 PM, where attendees can engage with the speakers, diving deeper into the narratives that built the ROXY’s legacy.

The day-long celebration promises not only to be a feast for the eyes but also an enriching experience for the attendees, as they walk through the photographic narratives, immerse themselves in the engaging conversation, and network during the reception that follows. The event, while free, has limited seating, encouraging early RSVP through https://Roxy50.eventbrite.com to secure a spot.

It is expected to reach full capacity quickly owing to the high anticipation surrounding it. Those unable to attend can still be a part of the experience as the talk will be livestreamed on the City’s YouTube channel, with recordings available for future viewing. The organizers recommend availing of public transit, ride shares, or carpools, as parking is limited to availability in the adjacent 5-story West Hollywood Park structure. For more information, potential attendees can reach out to Mike Che, the Arts Coordinator, at mche@weho.org.

This golden jubilee celebration offers a rare glimpse into the making of a cultural institution that has been “rockin'” for half a century, a place where history was made and legends were born. It is not just a walk down memory lane, but a celebration of a vibrant living history that continues to shape the music industry and offer unforgettable experiences to artists and audiences alike. It’s more than an exhibit; it’s a bridge to a glorious past and a hopeful future, echoing with the melodies of legendary performances and resonating with the heartbeats of countless music lovers who found joy and inspiration within its walls.
