Dear Captain Moulder,

Iโ€™m writing to share this alarming image calling for physical violence, posted on the northeast corner of Curson and Santa Monica Blvd.

The image reads โ€œSKIN YOUR LOCAL TERFโ€. โ€œTERFโ€ is an acronym for โ€œtrans exclusionary radical feministโ€, a pejorative for feminists who believe in sex-based legal protections for women.

This may seem like a simple sticker, but this type of increasingly violence messaging has been popping up locally this year, and has no place in our community.

Thank you for your steadfast service in protecting our freedom of speech, while also recognizing the serious implications of such calls to physical violence, including torture and murder, based on oneโ€™s political beliefs.

All the best,

West Seegmiller

During the beginning of the pandemic, I personally received threats on Instagram by a current member of BLM and the Social Justice Task Force along with several of her colleagues dedicated to ruining my business. While the message was not as graphic as the image shown in this article, it was as hateful and dangerous giving the appearance that the City would endorse such behavior. Although the IG account was taken down the comments were preserved.

Wow! Thatโ€™s terrible, and beyond inappropriate for a public official. Consider filing a complaint with the City Clerk, it at least puts the incident in the public record which is useful in any law suit against the City. If so compelled feel free to contact me [email protected]

OMG, it’s super messed up to see all this violent propaganda stuff in town. Seriously, it’s not cool at all. And what’s even worse is when they claim it’s about LGBT rights, but it’s actually hurting the whole movement. Why can’t people just be nice and accepting? SMH ๐Ÿ˜”

No political or glbt rhetoric should be forced down anybody’s throats in any form, in any way whether it’s coming from some reprehensible sticker on a sign post or from the headlines of the L.A. times. It has to stop in all areas. Live and let live.

As a free-speech absolutist, I will defended (and have in uniform) the First Amendment right of anyone to say anything short of commanding violence. Speech that is hateful is vile and reprehensible but not illegal, nor should it ever be. The speech depicted in the photograph crosses that high bar into commanding violence and finds no protective home in the First Amendment. We should be ever vigilant in avoiding the tendency to conflate mere hate (ugly as it is) with explicit calls to inflict harm. At least two members of our city council (Shyne and Erickson) are frequent abusers of… Read more »
