A group calling itself West Hollywood Concerned Neighbors has nearly reached its goal of 1,000 signatures on a change.org petition opposing a development project at 910 North Wetherly in the Norma Triangle.
The petition asks for the project’s permits to be revoked until an environmental impact report has been completed and a public scoping session has been conducted. The neighbors also want the building to be reduced in height from seven to four floors.
“7 stories above ground and 3 stories below ground in a liquefaction zone with inadequate parking will block our natural light, making solar impossible for neighbors dealing with rising electrical costs due to dependencies on electric appliances and cars, pose a risk to neighboring foundations, further increase noise and traffic which we already deal with from the nearby hotel and school and make street parking impossible,” wrote signer Derek I.
“How are 89 units feasible on a lot where only 16 units are supposed to be allowed?” Jessica Azizzadeh commented. “This poses dangerous traffic concerns next to a grammar school. The neighborhood already has a parking problem and it will be chaos with the introduction of this ridiculous number of units. The narrow streets can barely handle the current load of existing units in this neighborhood. The city council and developers are not using common sense in what is truly viable on that lot and what is good for the neighborhood!”
The project is set to go before the Planning Commission on Oct. 19.
“This is our last opportunity to be heard by the West Hollywood Planning Commission. They need to see all of us united,” the petition reads.
The grounds for blocking this are very slight as California law protects and encourages this kind of development.
However, there is no law that protects the project for having parking for a third party (the church next door). This can be banned by the planning commission. Their agreements with the church might require it, and the whole thing could unravel upon this single issue.
Join the fun, Norma Triangle people. The rest of WeHo has been overdeveloping with ridiculously huge projects for years. Blocking the sun? Boo hoo! Maybe this will get you to vote out the developer-money grubbing City Council. Welcome to WeHo!
This project was doomed from the start with all the nefarious dealings. A respectable project might be welcomed but this is not it.
This sounds like the Chevron Station issue all over again.
Yes. But not quite as bad as the Chevron car wash which is much more of a strangulation of the neighborhood. It’s another mind-blowing, suffocating blow to a group of already cripplingly congested multi directional intersections. How do THEY keep getting away with this? All in the name of what? Of letting an incompetent city council keep the developers happy? I should never have left Silver Lake
The scale of this project is ridiculous. Very happy to hear they’re fighting this.
