About 60 people waited in line to get free fruits and vegetables from Seeds of Hope on Tuesday morning at Plummer Park in West Hollywood.
The city contracts with Seeds of Hope, the food justice ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, to hold a monthly grocery giveaway for people who are homeless or cannot afford food. Jewish Family Services, also contracted by WeHo, was also set up nearby providing toiletries and pantry goods like raw walnuts and granola bars.
Those waiting in line were almost all elderly, and most were women speaking Russian. Plummer Park is a central gathering space for WeHo’s Russian community. Only three or four middle-aged, possibly homeless men were seen in line.
I’m not sure I understand the newsworthiness of this article and the need to single out the demographics of the people. I find it mean spirted to point out the age and possible ethic backgrounds of those standing in line
No ill will on our part! WEHOonline is always looking to better understand the city’s vast social services, including things like how much they cost and who receives them, so you can have a clearer idea of where your money is going and whether it’s being used properly.
It should not be news that people are hungry nor should they have to be photographed in the process of accepting assistance. The words in this article and the photograph are demeaning and uncalled for. As for WehoQueen, your comment is disgusting and unnecessary.
People have no right to privacy in public. I’m sure you’d have no problem if they were police officers or celebrities. Maybe complain to the organizations about doing giveaways in the open? Your comment is misguided.
This article is misleading. Checking the Seeds of Hope website, there is no information about any requirement that anyone prove they are homeless, or prove they can’t afford food. In other words, it is open to anyone, including all the usual Weho and adjacent freeloaders, who have figured out another way to get food without paying for it. I would bet at least some of those supposedly homeless/poor people in line, are actually millionaires. I know most or perhaps all local “foodbanks” are open to anyone who shows up, including millionaires who don’t like paying for things. And we wonder… Read more »
If they were a non-profit no one would mind (would be a good thing). But these are taxpayer dollars given away without any qualifying restrictions.
And the article singled out Russians in the headline. Try substituting “Blacks”, or “Jews” or any other group in that headline. That’s why the headline should have just singled out “freeloaders”.
When they start means- testing millionaires (and other high earners) for government subsidies, then you can gripe.
Talk about real money, kiddo.
Didn’t work too well when they wanted proof that the new minimum wage would kill businesses. Some complaints there from the other side.
I understand. You can totally tell from that picture that those people are filthy rich. Get off the internet, go outside and pull the wings off a butterfly, it will make you feel better.
You should volunteer at a food bank , where you can meet those millionaires and confront them and get financial advice.
