Kelly Palotai speaks during Public Comment at Monday night’s Public Safety Commission meeting.
Hi, I live at 1216 North Detroit Street. My apartment is right beside the back of Ralphs, and we have been having problems with the homeless and their activities using the stairwell for years. We have complained about it, but nothing has been done. They climb the fence. We have found needles on our property.
There have been people who have defecated in our carport. It’s just out of control, all hours of the day and night. They go in and out. I get woken up in the middle of the night by people pounding on the door and screaming because they want to go in there. I just recently watched a young family pushing a baby stroller while the drug addicts were out in front writing. No cut, no smut. So who knows what’s going on in there? I know they’ve called Hazmat and cleaned it out a few times.
Nobody is doing anything. Call the police; they don’t do anything. The safety ambassadors really don’t do anything. Ralphs does not do anything. Something has to be done. My building has six units that are occupied. All but one are women. We are not safe. We had to put a lock on our laundry room because they were using it to turn tricks in. It is out of control, and nobody is doing anything about it. Last week, they set a fire. And the sprinklers went off. Thank God, but this is just out of control.
I don’t want to lose my place or possessions. I do not want to have to wrangle up two cats to get them out of the apartment when it’s burning because of Ralphs. I complained to the managers. I called corporate once; nothing has been done, and this has been going on for years. My neighbor, who is an elderly person in the building owned by WeHo, had a gun pulled on him in the middle of the day at like 12 o’clock, trying to rob him. It has got out of control, and something needs to be done.
I don’t feel safe. I mean, I wouldn’t care if they closed down that Ralphs because I have to drive there at night anyways, because I won’t walk in the dark. I don’t even like walking in the daytime past that. I remember when I first moved in 11 and a half years ago, it was safe, and the thing I would have to worry about is like tripping over a stray cat or something.
It’s gotten worse and worse every year, and nobody, nobody does a thing about it. I fear for my safety. Thank you.
The City needs to publish a set of protocols and put them directly into the hands of the resident, building owners and home owners in order to deal with situations like this. PRONTO!!
This is not something that needs lengthy deliberations and staff policy making. Sheriff Captain to sit with City Attorney, City Manager, Public Safety Director and hammer it out to go onto the Consent Calendar at the next CC Meeting. PRONTO!!
You are so right!
WAIT UNTIL THE HOMELESS SHELTER OPENS ON SANTA MONICA IN WEST WEST HOLLYWOOD. IT WILL ALL GET BETTER. City Council is 3 idiots and 2 smarts. And next, the subway. We are doomed.
If there were consequences for bad life choices the homeless made, we would have fewer homeless to deal with. I’m sorry your city has let you down, but I suspect you voted for many of the ones responsible for your heartache.
If if there are consequences for every time you lost your phone, would there be far less phones?consequences for every time you made bad mistakes? Would there be far less mistakes? We have a humanitarian crisis which is called a lack of housing dictated by an economy in which wages have gone down. Housing has gone up in pricing and an economy that is regulated by banking system for profit. It’s not that complicated. What you can do is have a little empathy and realize these are human beings and sometimes they need our help.
Stop blaming the CC for everything.
I think the building manager needs to do something.
Did you even read this This is the problem from the stairwell that belongs to Ralph’s and no one doing anything about it. I guess government will do something about it when someone dies. The mayor and the city council don’t care
Sure. The building manager is going to solve the entire homeless problem the city council created. Maybe the city councils policy of welcoming the homeless, giving them free stuff including housing, wasn’t such a great idea. Spend the money on more jails and prisons.
Reality✅ the cost of sending someone to jail or prison is significantly greater than the all Higher Education👨🏽🎓 expenses of producing a Doctor⚕ or Scientist⚛, with the latter option having consistently generated returns on the investment.
The city council did not create homelessness nor can they solve it. We don’t have jails or prisons in in West Hollywood are you proposing a jail or prison next door to where you live?
Landlord
No, I think Ralphs has to do something.
THis is Kelli and it is not our apartment manager’s fault. It is Ralphs, the police, and the city who are doing nothing. THe fire escape belongs to Ralphs, as does the wall and the fence they are climbing to get on our property. THe fire happened in fire escape, not on our property. Please read my speech more closely!
Now I friends who have been shoplifting at Ralphs for years and, I don’t want to further empower them or anyone else to further oppress our unhoused residents. We should be focused on WHY there are NOT enough Public Housing and Rent Controlled apartments available to insure that NO ONE is unhoused ❗
That’s not the issue here
Sorry you have to suffer this lack of responsibility on the part of that Ralph’s. Certainly this is a city issue that needs immediate attention. .
Unfortunately, due to the failed policies that run rampant in this state, this city…this is what law abiding, hardworking, tax paying citizens have to deal with. Don’t like what has happened to this state/city..Vote differently. What we have been doing for a long time now IS NOT WORKING. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result is the definition of insanity.
That’s right, now don’t vote for capitalists❗
This is one of the worst stories of abuse by the homeless predators that I have read about in West Hollywood. Unfortunately, the women should move elsewhere for their safety–and hire a great lawyer to sue Ralph’s and the city.
We have all been here except for one resident (3 years) for over 9 years. We have rent control and none of us could possibly afford to move. I have spoke to a friend who is a lawyer (not his area of expertise though) How in the heck is a couple of people going to fight against the Kroger Co. ?
“History is a testimony to the success of oppressed people coming together in overcoming the mightiest of imperialist powers ❗ ”
Quote attributed to one of my relatives leading the struggle of the Donetsk Peoples Republic.☭
Call KTLA or any news outlet?
Great idea!
Homeless predators ❓ 😲 The REAL predators are the real estate moguls who are responsible for creating the conditions for your problems to exist in the first place. The last run in I had with the homeless a sheriff’s deputy 🐷 ended up lecturing me how I’m “making them uncomfortable” and “bothering them” and, if I continue he will consider this “harassment.”
How We Solved the Problem at My Place ❗
When people came over to our place bringing their fun drugs & sexual activities to our place, we put our foot down. There wasn’t going to be any exclusion of us, if you are bringing in drugs you better have enough to share with the rest of us and, the same with public sex activities too.
Mad at Ralphs ❓ Their self checkout is easy to hack, getting steak & lobster at potato prices.
not funny.
never is.
You guys do realize I’m serious.
Cy, you seem a bit cray cray.
