RIP 🪦 Charcoal Sunset 2023-2024

Charcoal Sunset is toast.

The newest fine-dining establishment from Josiah Citrin, the chef behind Mélisse and Citrin, has called it quits after less than a year in business.

Charcoal Sunset, a spinoff of the original Charcoal restaurant in Venice, opened in July 2023 to much fanfare, but Citrin said the tough economic environment in West Hollywood left him no choice but to shut the restaurants doors for good this past Sunday, according to Eater LA.

“After delays and extreme changes to the cost of doing business over the last couple of years, especially in West Hollywood, it is a real bummer, to say the least, that we had to make the difficult decision to suspend operations at Charcoal Sunset,” he said.

The Sunset Strip locale represented a substantial investment for Citrin and its loss is a blow to his golden reputation as a restaurateur.

Why doesn’t Weho Online report on *OPENINGS* anymore?

Was there an article on here about Fan Girl Cafe? Or Pantheon Coffee? How about a post telling people that Mamie is now open and ready for business?

Ready Fit Go opened a few weeks ago too.

As you can see is no point of doing that… they all close immediately so focusing on closing is a better perspective of REALITY

It’s not the job of any media business to be the PR factory for any private business. For that, they are welcome to pay for advertising.

we are not a bulletin board for each open, close, death or crime. we also are not just posting every city hall press release. you can find that stuff elsewhere. we do pretty well with zero full time employees.

Doing business in West Hollywood is miserable, it’s an unsupportive environment. Our city government makes every step from inception thru supporting staff as difficult as possible. For the amount of salary and benefits each city employee earns, they are disrespectful with business owners time and resources.

This is a shame. They did a beautiful job with the space and the food was outstanding but never had a chance. What good is raising the minimum wage to $19 + tips + PTO when there will be zero jobs? How is that helpful to the local economy?

when there will be zero jobs”

Are you purposefully being obtuse? There are thousands of jobs in West Hollywood. Restaurants open and close all the time. Stop with the conjecture.

I was being specific to the restaurant industry in West Hollywood. Perhaps you’re the one who’s “obtuse”, as I believe my specific point is made clear by the inclusion of “tips”. Why project your misery on me? I’m having a great day, maybe some of mine can rub off on yours.

Awaiting the lies, spin, manipulation, and lack of math comprehension that will emanate from the mouths of Shyne and Erickson.
